The other night I completed a post on Jeremy Reed so it seems only fitting to complete one on reliever Sean Green. The 29 y/o side arming pitcher is best described as a more re-fined version of Joe Smith. Green has two and half partial seasons in the majors ( 2006-2008) he's made 160 appearances ( 170 innings) with 4.32 ERA, SO/BB 130/83, GO/AO 2.96. Last year Green pitched in 72 games ( 79 innings) with a record of 4-5 and an ERA 4.67. Looking at the splits, in the first half of the season he had an ERA of 2.72 and the second half an 8.65. He didn't allow more then two runs in a game until May 26 which was his 26 appearance of the year and he gave up 4 runs to the Yankees. His next bad outing was against Oakland on August 22 (4 runs) and then running out of gas he gave up 3 runs to Minnesota and 4 runs to the Angels. His splits still aren't great, lefties are hitting .299 compared .233 and his ERA against LHB 6.68 Vs. RHB 3.38 but still his innings are more then his appearances which means at least Seattle was using him as a cross over pitcher.Upon hearing the news of the trade the Tigers are reported to have immediately inquired about the reliever. NYFS bloggers say that Keith Law was on the radio today and had the following to say about Green, along with his teammate from Seattle, J.J. agreeing with the numbers that he was over used. I couldn't find a video of his delivery but he has a wicked pick-off move......
Nick (Long Island, NY): You recently ranked Sean Green as the 3rd best winter meeting acquisition. Do you see his stuff as being better than that of Joe Smith.
SportsNation Keith Law: (1:09 PM ET ) Yes, it is better than Smith's. source NYFS ForumGreen was 4-5 with a 4.67 ERA last season in 72 games for the Mariners. Asked if Green got tired at the end of the season, Putz said, “He got overused a little last year, yeah.”source Daily News
