Apparently the Mets are pretty serious about looking into Nick Punto, they've gone as far as to request Punto's medical records. I believe one of the area's the Mets failed last year, which has been over looked is the bench. The Mets failed to put together a bench that gave the starters the opportunity to get rest so that they didn't break down at the end of the year. For much of the season the Mets carried three catchers and two second basemen. Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, David Wright and Carlos Beltran all longed way too many innings to over come a two run deficit in the last game of the season after the seventh inning.I believe the Mets realize this and it's why last year they attempted to trade for Alfredo Amazega and this year are strongly looking at Nick Punto. They need bench players who could fill in at multiple positions as a starter if needed or play regularly at several different positions. As I said before, Punto could be the second baseman in waiting or a super utility player who gave everybody a day off during the week...
I'm not very familiar with Punto, I can't even rem. him from his days with the Phillies but in looking for a picture of him for this post, there are more pictures of him diving for balls then any other player I've ever goggled.
The Twins want infielder Nick Punto back as a starter or a utility player and will meet with Punto's agent, Jeff Caulfield, during the meetings. Caulfield has received calls from several teams, including the Phillies and Mets, with the Mets even looking at Punto's medical records. source Post-Bulletin
