More on Lowe....

Here's the thing that troubles me, it's being reported in multiple places that the Mets are close to a deal for Derek Lowe. Allegedly the deal is believed to be three years with a vesting option on a fourth year at around 15M per year. Omar doesn't operate in a public manner so this is either truly this close that he can't contain it or this is a Boras tactic to get another team involved. rem. just 24hrs. ago it appeared that the Red Sox were destine to obtain Tex. but when he price was leaked the Yanks decided to one up their division rival. With any other agent I'd be pretty confident at this point but with Boras I won't believe it until the ink dries....

So here are a few more articles on this potential deal; the Times says we can thank the Yanks for Lowe, the Daily News said a deal could come between now and New Years, the NY Post seems to share my trepidation....

But I wonder if they’re left a little scarred and may back off, even if just for a little while. That may mean the end of Varitek’s days in Boston. It could mean that the Red Sox explore other avenues for starting pitching. It could mean that Lowe, just as the Mets hoped, falls right into their lap, at a price they desire. And if that happens, remarkably enough, they can thank the Yankees. source NY Times

Lowe has been the Mets' top target among starting pitchers all along, and a club source said Tuesday that GM Omar Minaya is far enough along in negotiations for the righthander that a conclusion could be reached "between Christmas and New Year's." source Daily News

Minaya may have serious competition for Lowe. Now that Teixeira isn't headed to Boston, the Red Sox could make a major push to sign Lowe, who spent 7½ years with Boston before departing as a free agent following the 2004 season.source NY Post
