Offers coming...closers

Not much new here, but since the reports continue to become increasingly more specific it appears that they have validity. Last week reports began to trickle in that the Mets would meet with both Brian Fuentes and Francisco Rodriguez at the winter meetings, with Fuentes even stating that he'd be willing to come to NY. Then on Friday Buster Olney reported that the Mets were going to make offers to the top three closers ( K-Rod, Fuentes, Wood) and the first to accept would be the Mets next closer. It appeared that Wood was an inexpensive after thought until yesterday a Chicago Sun Times article reported that the Mets have been pursuing Wood. This morning it was reported on ESPN radio 1050, by Andrew Marchand that the Mets would "probably" make offers to the closers at the winter meetings (source Metsblog). Buster Olney solidifies the Mets plan by stating that the three offers will be made at the winter meetings with the first acceptor getting the job. It appears the only other big spender in the closers market is the Brewers who could wait for the Mets to set the market and make a move on one of the others, unless they have already targeted a specific closer. Of Course, teams like the Giants and Rangers always scare me because they always seem to come out of no where and make huge offers.

The Mets intend to present what they consider to be suitable offers to closer targets during the winter meetings. It's not known precisely what they will offer to which pitcher, but here is an educated guess: Francisco Rodriguez, three years and $36 million; Brian Fuentes, three years and $30 million; Kerry Wood, two years and $16 million to $18 million. source ESPN
