It was reported last week that the Mets were interested in recently non-tendered right handed reliever Joe Nelson. The 34 y/o had a break out season in his second full season, in 59 appearances he posted an ERA of 2.00 with a 3-1 record. The year before with the Royals he made 43 appearances with a 4.43 ERA. Prior to that he made 2 appearances with the braves in 2001 and 3 appearances with the Red Sox in 2004....Without giving specifics, Schaer said a few teams have presented seven-figure deals. In the mix are the Royals, Cardinals, Red Sox, Braves, Rays and Mets. source MLB.com
I don't see the Mets making a huge push for Nelson, sure he had a good year but at 34 y/o was that a fluke. The Mets have four righties vying for two spots; Sanchez, Stokes, Robertson and O'Day. I'd be surprised if the Mets went past a minor league deal and somebody else might be willing to do better. It appears that the Rays are amongst the front runners...
The Ray are among the top five choices for free-agent reliever Joe Nelson, who was contacted by nearly 20 teams after being non-tendered by the Marlins. source TampaBay.com
