It appears eminent that the Cubs will land Jake Peavy and while that will make the Cubs formidable in the playoffs but if it's going to happen another team would be smart to benefit from the situation. Apparently the Cubs can't bring in Jake Peavy until they find a home for Jason Marquis. Omar is smart not to give up Heilman for Marquis especially with the Cubs so desperate to move him, but if they want to practically give him away I could see him competing for the fifth spot or long man role. If it could be expanded to include, rumored to be available Mark DeRosa then giving them Heilman makes more sense, DeRosa would be a right handed hitting utility player. It would also block the Phillies from getting involved...Whether the potential three-team deal winds up including a fourth team, the biggest holdup appears to be the Cubs' need to move enough of Jason Marquis' $9.875 million contract to accommodate Peavy's $11 million salary and still be able to add the left-handed bat they covet. source Chicago Sun-Times
Nolan Ryan president of the Texas Rangers wants to add Ben Sheets. I'd love to have Sheets but on a muti-year deal he's just too much of an injury risk. Sheets seems like a good fit in Texas as he resides their during the off-season. The Rangers will need to move salary to make that happen and the Mets have inquired about Millwood and Padilla. Both had their most success in the NL east and would be back end of the rotation help.....
Ryan said the club would have to move some pieces to free up financial space for an expensive contract. That could include trading Hank Blalock and Kevin Millwood or Vicente Padilla. Sheets could command around $12 million per season on a three- or four-year deal.
"Did we budget to go out and sign a high-dollar free agent? No," Ryan said. "Could we get ourselves in a position that we might have an opportunity to sign someone of his magnitude? Maybe. I'm certainly not making a prediction we would." source Dallas News
