On Lowe meeting with Atlanta...

From the same source who reported on Christmas Eve that the Mets were close to a deal, is now reporting that Derek Lowe will meet with Braves officials today.
According to a baseball source, Lowe is scheduled to meet with representatives of the Braves this afternoon in Atlanta. source Boston Globe

I'm not surprised that this comes on the heels of yesterdays lunch for two reasons, the Boras camp needs to drum up interest in their client to get the Mets to increase their bid and Lowe's free agency is coming to a close. It's been reported in Atlanta that the Braves wouldn't be willing to outbid the Mets' initial offer, so unless they've had a drastic change of heart this is simply a meet and greet. I am skeptical of these reports as it was widely reported that the Mets meet with Trevor Hoffman and it was later discovered that the meeting never occurred.
In fact, it doesn't seem like the Braves would be willing to better the rejected three-year, $36 million offer the Mets recently made to Lowe, who stands as the most attractive starting pitcher remaining on the free-agent market. source MLB.com

The Braves have money to spend but they general don't give older pitchers multi-year deals, I could see them going all in on Ollie but not Lowe. The Braves are also going to have to convince Lowe to sign without getting a no-trade clause ( has always been their policy) which most older players want because they want to control their destiny. Furthermore, they have to convince Lowe after three years of not making the playoff they are a contender. Couple all of that with the fact that they aren't in the northeast and whether there's a meeting or not I have a hard time believing Atlanta is a true contender for his services...

However, there is a rumor currently circulating that Lowe was very insulted by our initial offer and the way we have negotiated. There's a slight possibility that Lowe won't sign with the Mets ( pure speculation), if that's the case that's the third player ( Delgado, Zito and Lowe) to complain about the Mets tactics and if that's the case it might be something they need to look at.
