There's a great debate amongst the Mets blogosphere, as to what the teams biggest need is, a front line starter or an offensive player.First of all, I don't think we have the pieces that we're willing to give up for a front line starter and I'm fine with Santana, Pelfrey and Maine.
I still think we can improve the back-end of the rotation and acquire an offensive player.
In my opinion, there are too many variables for Omar to sit back and say, the offense will be fine when everybody returns.
We may not be in contention when everybody returns and that just seems to be putting all your eggs in one basket, mentality.
I would rather that Jerry is struggling to find at bats for players in Sept., instead of losing tremendous pitching performances, 1-0 to mediocre teams...
Jon Heyman believes, as well that the Mets are looking for offense first...
Mets: They'll look at starters and possibly relievers, too, especially if J.J. Putz doesn't begin to resemble himself (throwing 92 mph without control now). But right now they appear to be talking more about seeking outfield help, what with Angel Pagan, Jeremy Reed and Gary Sheffield getting a lot more time (and performing much better) than expected. Matt Holliday, who's off to a slow start with the A's, would make sense. But the Mets would not trade Fernando Martinez for him. First base is another possibility if Daniel Murphy doesn't pan out, though so far he looks good defensively at that position. source SI.com
