I remember distinctly when the Mets traded a couple relievers, one with injury concerns and the other suddenly found extra MPH on his fastball in his late 20's, the diamond in the rough of the deal was suppose to be Adam Bostick. The Mets acquired two lefties and gave up two righties that they had concerns about, but while the righties went on to contribute for Marlins neither lefty produced for the Mets.
The Mets hoped Jason Vargas would break into the bottom of the rotation in 2007, but after two injury plagued, failed seasons, his best production was that he had enough value to be moved in the J.J. Putz trade.
Bostick ended up to be an even bigger disappointment, coming to the Mets as a 24 y/o left hander who projected to be a starter but had control issues, the expectations were high. For two partial seasons in AAA as a starter his ERA hovered around 5.85 which included several stints on the DL.
He was even removed from the 40 man roster without being claimed and started this year on a minor league contract as a starter. But he only started one game, in which he lasted three innings, allowing one run before being moved to the pen.
Since moving to the pen, Bostick has been lights out and the question is no longer if Bostick is a bust, but more, why isn't he up with the the big league club. This is the time when we're suppose to be evaluating players for next year. While we keep journeymen like Tim Redding, Nelson Figeruoa and Elmer Dessens, we have a possible second lefty in AAA that should be with the team to see how he fares against major leaguers ( same could be said for Pat Misch).
Bostick in 18 AAA appearances as a reliever has an ERA of 1.98 with his experience as a starter he has been successful in multiple inning outings. Those 18 appearances have logged 27 innings, in which he's allowed 6 ERs on 17 hits, 15 walks and 29 strike outs. Last night he recorded the second save of the season by pitching three scoreless innings of relief. Batters are hitting .175 against him, with runners on .191, when they get in scoring position .172, and when he gets ahead in the count .122.
