If I'm trading for a catcher Doumit's my target..

There are some very nice catchers available via trade; names like Shoppach, Snyder and Buck but if I'm trading for a catcher the player who would top my list is Ryan Doumit.

The 28 y/o catcher is a switch hitter who has a reasonable contract all the way through 2013. Doumit is owed 3.55MM in 2010, 5.1MM in 2011, club option in 2012 for 7.25MM and a club option in 2013 for 8.25MM ( source Cots contract).

The young catcher burst onto the scene in 2008 by hitting .318 in 116 games with a .501 Slg. pct. ( 34 doubles, 15 HR, 69 RBIs). But in 2009 he struggled playing in only 75 games and hitting .250. One bad year with that contract is enough for the Pirates to move him and it looks like that's might be exactly what their trying to do.

The sources believe Pittsburgh would not hesitate to move Doumit, 28, in the right deal. The Pirates have dealt a number of veteran players since Neal Huntington took over as general manager at the end of the 2007 season. Doumit batted .250 with 10 home runs and 38 RBIs in an injury-shortened 2009 season. But his appeal is twofold: Doumit has the potential to hit for power, as evidenced by his .858 OPS in 2008, and he has big-league experience as a catcher, first baseman and right fielder.

There is a range of opinion within the industry as to which position suits him best. While he's not considered a superb defender anywhere on the diamond, his versatility could appeal to teams that need to add a power bat — but aren't entirely sure where. source Fox Sports
