The Mets are also reported to have checked in on free agent 1B Nick Johnson. I really wanted Johnson last year at the deadline but moving forward I just don't think he meets our needs.Johnson's assets are that he's an OBP and a solid defender, however; reports from Florida in the second half of the season were that his defensive skills were diminishing. After seeing this team attempt all last season to play the move the line along game where a multiple run inning took double digit hits I thirst for more power then what Johnson can provide.
More then anything Johnson is a huge injury risk which I believe will be what ultimately makes the Mets shy away...
The lefty-swinging Johnson, 31, hit .291 last year while splitting the season between the Nationals and Marlins. A former Yankee, Johnson has long been considered an injury risk. source NY Post
