Already beginning the PR machine the Mets have begun to discard the top tier of free agents as being too expensive and are beginning to focus their efforts on the next level of free agents. One of the first things to come out of the GM meetings was that were already finding excuses to not be interested in Matt Holliday, Jason Bay and John Lackey.
The excuse with Lackey was his history of injuries and according to Jon Heyman they are now looking at guys like Joel Pineiro.
Pineiro is the type of guy who excelled under Dave Duncan and even without the pitching guru probably does better in smaller markets. The 31 y/o right hander has a lifetime ERA of 4.39 with an 87-79 record. His best years came in 2002-2003 with the Mariners until he rebounded last year in St. Louis, in 2007 he had an awful first half with Boston before being traded to the Cards.
#mets interested in improved pitcher joel pineiro. but dont seem thrilled if $30 mil for 3 is the price tag, as expected. source jon_heyman twitter
