The Mercury News ( Bay area paper) speculates that the A's are looking to move Jack Cust. It sounds like it won't cost much to move him since they're faced with non-tendering him if they can't move him. I posted here, that I didn't think Cust belonged in the NL and was more of an AL DH but if they're practically giving him away then I could see bringing him in to compete for a 1B / bench job. Now, some will say that they don't want to pay him what he'll receive through arbitration. However, if an arby player is cut before a certain date, you only pay them a prorated portion of the contract ( I believe it's March 15th an only 1/3 of the total), if you keep him then he's working out and you should be satisfied with his cost. Really the only questions, if the Mets are interested is whether they think they can get him cheap then the cut cost after he's non-tendered.
What's more, the A's still have a shot at trading Cust this week instead of nontendering him. The New York Mets and Seattle Mariners reportedly might be interested. source Mercury News
