Coste becomes official..

The made it official with a press release that Chris Coste has been signed to a one year contract and will be added to the 40 man roster. While it's not clarified in the press release the contract is believed to be a major/ minor league split, in which he'll be on the 40 man but can start the year in the minors, Cory Sullivan had a similar deal last year.

Most of us know Coste as the 33 y/o back-up rookie catcher, so why does the press release refer to him as a 1B/C. Since 2006 he has 218 games at catcher and 20 games at 1B on the major league level. However, Coste spent 11 years in the minors before he ever got a shot in the majors, his first five years were in the independent leagues and then for the next six years he spent most of his time in AAA ( with a little AA sprinkled in).

During his minor league career he played 173 gms at catcher, 208 gms at first, 156 gms at third, pitched 5 gms, 13 gms. in the OF and 5 gms at second.

While I believe he will spend most of the season in AAA helping Santos and Thole work on their defensive skills, he is more versatile then given credit for...
