According to the NY Times the Mets have contacted Hisanori Takahashi's agent. The left handed screw ball pitcher is more of a reliever then a starter but this is probably about keeping their options open. Meanwhile, Minaya continues to look for pitching. The Mets attended Ben Sheets’s workout in Louisiana on Tuesday, although his injury history is an issue. They are also in talks with Joel Piniero and have spoken to the agents for the Japanese left-hander Hisanori Takahashi. source NY Times
Hat tip to Patrick at NPB Tracker who breaks down the market for Takahashi. Here's part of Patrick's profile of the 35 y/o left hander.
Takahashi has said he wants to continue in a starting role after he crosses the Pacific, but putting everything together he seems better suited for the bullpen. That said, assuming his screwball doesn’t get lost in translation, I don’t see why he can’t be an effective reliever in the Okajima mold. source NPB Tracker
