Insight on Riggans from Rays Index...

I'm not trying to turn this into the flagship blog for Shawn Riggans, but I emailed my post on Riggans to one of the bigger Rays blogs to get their take on him. I thought I'd pass along their response. Thanks again to Rays Index for their insight...

Riggans has the potential to be a solid big league catcher. He can hit a little and he there is some pop in his swing. If given regular playing time he could probably give you a .350 OBP and 12-15 HR. But his problems are two-fold.

1. He does some things well behind the plate (blocking balls in the dirt, handling pitchers) but he has no arm. The only chance Riggans has of throwing out a runner is if the first baseman grabs the runner's jersey. And even then, it will be close.

2. Can he stay healthy? Rigo has this annoying habit of suffering some minor nagging injury and next thing you know he is done for the year. Sound familiar? That could be a terrible match with the Mets medical staff.

Otherwise. The Mets got a decent athletic catcher in his prime years. They could do worse.
