I believe it's inevitable that Mike Jacobs will make this team, in fact I think he's pushing Dan Murphy for playing time at 1B. More proof that the team is attempting to justify Jacobs position is the fact that they have him catching. The Mets under Jerry and Omar have always liked the concept of having an emergency third catcher, all the way back to Eli Marrero. The last few years the emergency catchers were Carlos Delgado and Fernando Tatis, neither of which was really a practical answer, if due to match-ups they had gone through their catchers in an extra inning game. Like Delgado, Jacobs came up through the minors as a catcher but due to their bats they were moved to 1B, but unlike Delgado, Jacobs isn't that far removed from the position or too brittle to actually man the position for an inning...
Yes, that was Mike Jacobs this morning, with a bag of catching equipment in front of his locker. Jacobs looks like he's the leading candidate for the final bench spot with the Mets, and the organization has asked him to catch on a limited basis in order to increase his versatility. So Jacobs, who caught in the minors with the Mets before being converted to first base in 2005, is planning to catch Tobi Stoner's bullpen session before today's Mets-Twins game. source Daily News
