Mets sign Fernando Perez

The Mets signed OF Fernando Perez to a minor league deal.  The 28 y/o switch hitting outfielder made his major league debut with the Rays in 2008 and even contributed to their success in the playoff's by scoring the winning run in the 11th inning against Boston.

In 2009 he suffered a wrist injury during spring training and only came up at roster expansion in Sept.  He spent all of 2010 with the Rays AAA team and was traded with Matt Garza to the Cubs during the off-season.  This season he has been with the Cubs AAA affliate prior to being released.

Perez has 107 major league plate appearances in which he's produced a .234 BA and in four AAA seasons he's produced a .256 BA, .326 OBP, .350 Slg. and .675 OPS.  Maybe the NJ native will have the added incentive of playing for a home town team, to help him return to his once prospect form...

17) Fernando Perez, OF, Grade C+

Hitting .287/.361/.398 with 30 steals for Durham. Impressive speed and defensive skills, some pop, strikes out a lot but will also take a walk. Would be a fine fourth outfielder. source Minor league ball
