News: August 21st Return For Santana?

According to WFAN's Ed Coleman, the Mets have targeted an August 21st afternoon game against the Milwaukee Brewers as the tentative date for Johan Santana's return. Coleman quickly reiterates the the timetable is 'fluid', but it is believed the Santana's first true rehab start will be August 6th for the Brooklyn Cyclones. After that, it is believed he would make several starts at the Triple A level prior to being called up to the Mets.

Santana, you'll recall, finally started his spring training routine earlier this month. After some early shoulder soreness that was described as "routine", he has progressed nicely. Most recently, he has been pitching side sessions and bullpens without incident.

My honest take on things is that this is an extremely tentative forecast for Santana's return. Provided the Mets don't go on some sort of unexpected run, there is virtually no reason for Santana to take the mound for the Mets this year other than his competitive instinct. Still two weeks away from this first projected start, I'm sure that we'll hear much more from Johan soon enough.
