Post Game: Mets Defeat Marlins 7-6

The New York Mets(50-49) defeated the Florida Marlins(47-53) behind a strong offensive showing and David Wright's return.

Although David Wright hadn't played a major league game since May 15th, he returned to a team invigorated by the people who doubted them, a team at .500--something that seemed like a long shot this late in the season when Wright went down. Needing to jump out of the box early with Mike Pelfrey on the mound, Wright wasted no time to show that his back injury was the cause of his struggles, ripping a double down the first base line to drive in a run and help bring the Mets to a 3-0 lead after the first inning.

Wright's performance was impressive, giving the Mets the lead in the 8th inning with a RBI double off of Edward Mujica to give the Mets a 6-5 lead before Daniel Murphy doubled Wright home to give the Mets a 7-5 lead.

Boiling Points:
  • Mike Pelfrey(5-9, ND,4.73 ERA) was once again shaky on the road, pitching 6 innings while allowing 4 runs on 5 hits and walking 4. Pelfrey was well over 100 pitches heading into his 6th inning of work as he struggled to put hitters away early on.
  • Pedro Beato was shaky in his 1/3 of an inning of work, allowing 1 run, 1 hit and 2 walks. He was replaced by Tim Byrdak, who let an Beato's inherited runner to score from 3rd.
  • Bobby Parnell(3-1, 3.10 ERA) would record the final out in the 7th before allowing a run in the 8th inning, but managed to hold the lead for Jason Isringhausen, who pitched a perfect 9th inning to record his 2nd save of the year.
  • Daniel Murphy continues to rake at the plate, having another multi-hit game and raising his average to .307. Murphy drove in 2 runs to bring his total to 42 on the year, 2nd behind Carlos Beltran
  • Jose Reyes and David Wright also had multi-hit games, and for Reyes it was his major league leading 45th multi-hit game of the year.
The New York Mets will look to take game 2 of their 3 game series in Miami tomorrow night at 7:10 PM ET.
