Post Game: Werth's Blast Powers Nats; Mets Lose 3-0

The New York Mets(55-52) were defeated by the Washington Nationals(50-56) to snap their 5 game winning streak powered by Jayson Werth's 3-run home run in the top of the 1st inning.

R.A Dickey(5-9, 3.77 ERA) suffered the loss, pitching 6 solid innings while allowing only 3 hits and 2 walks. Dickey's only blunder tonight came when Jayson Werth uppercut a "hanging" knuckle ball into the left field seats for a 3-run home run on his bobble head night to give the Nationals a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st. Neither team would score again. DJ Carrasco and Manny Acosta pitched the final 2 innings, managing to hold the deficit.

Yuniesky Maya(1-1, 5.40 ERA) earned the victory in his spot start for the new Arizona Diamondback Jason Marquis. Maya was extremely effective early on, changing speeds and working fast to keep the Mets without a hit for the first 3 2/3 innings before a David Wright single broke up the no-hit bid.

Boiling Points:
  • David Wright collected his 7th consecutive multi-hit game, only one shy of the Mets franchise record. Wright collected 2 singles and walked to raise his average to .280 on the year.
  • Willie Harris struck out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th inning, doing his best to channel his inner Carlos Beltran(Kidding...)
  • Jose Reyes went 0-4 but had several hard hit balls, including a bid for a 3-run home run. Reyes is hitting a "poor" .273 over his last 10 games and is just 1 for his last 11.
  • Lucas Duda also failed to record a hit, making him 0-7 in his last 2 games.
  • The team left 9 men on base and were 1-6 with runners in scoring position.
The Mets will look to take the rubber match of their series against the Nationals tomorrow afternoon at National's Park as Jon Niese will look for his 11th win of the year.
