Pre-Game: Game 99- New York Mets @ Florida Marlins

Do you hear that sound? It's the metaphoric metronome, and time is running out for Carlos Beltran's time on the New York Mets.

The New York Mets(49-49) will oppose the Florida Marlins(47-52) tonight at Sun Life Stadium as Mike Pelfrey(5-9, 4.67 ERA) will oppose Chris Volstad(5-8, 5.59 ERA). Pelfrey struggled mightily in his last start against Philadelphia, surrendering a 3-run home run to Michael Martinez which put the Phillies ahead indefinitely. Pelfrey lasted only 5 innings, surrendering 4 runs. It has been a rough go for Pelfrey on the road this year, posting a 2-8 record with a 5.77 ERA in 12 starts and 64 innings. Volstad, meanwhile, failed to reach the 4th inning during his last outing, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits in 3 innings. Despite the huge ERA, Volstad has pitched to a lower ERA at home(5.19) this year.

For the first time since May 15th, David Wright will return to the lineup and man third base. Wright's struggles at the plate should be largely attested to his back injury, but it should be interesting to see where he picks up tonight. Wright's .226/.337/.404 line is well below his career averages, but with Wright tearing the cover off the ball in the minors the Mets will hope it's a thing of the past.

The rumors swirling about Carlos Beltran are well known, and the core trio of Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes and David Wright will all be starting tonight for perhaps the last time. There was a time in which many people believed the three would never play together again, but if this is truly their swan song, it has been an interesting ride.
