Post Game Wrap-Up: Win Streak Ends, Pelfrey Struggles

The Mets 4 game winning streak came to end this afternoon as they were defeated by the Tigers 5-2. Despite not having his best stuff today, Justin Verlander still completed 7 innings of 1 run ball. His only blemish on the afternoon was a solo HR from Daniel Murphy. The Mets did have several good at-bats VS Verlander and drove his pitch count up to 120 by the time he was done on the afternoon, but Verlander made the big pitch when it counted and kept the Mets at bay. Mike Pelfrey on the other hand was bad today. He had no control as he tied a career high with 5 BB. On top of the walks, he also allowed 8 hits, leading to 5 runs (4ER) in only 4.2 innings. Pelfrey seems to be the one part of this club that is not producing, and as a fan, it is quite frustrating as he was anointed the "Ace" in spring training.

Game Stats:

  • Jose Reyes has two more hits as he was 2-3, with a BB.
  • Daniel Murphy Hit his 5th HR of the year.
  • Carlos Beltran hit his 12 HR of the year, a solo shot to RF.
  • Jason Bay had 2 more hits and now has is average up to .241 on the season.
The Mets will return to National League rules tomorrow night as they begin the 2nd rendition of the subway series with the Yankees. The starting pitchers will be LHP Jon Niese for the Mets (7-6, 3.67) and Ivan Nova (7-4, 4.26) for the Yankees. Game time is scheduled for 7:10 PM.

Willie Harris' wife loses child

Very sad news and heart felt prayers go out to Willie Harris, his wife and their entire family.  Multiple sources are reporting that the couple has lost their child due to pregnancy complications. Just terrible news...

Collins takes responsibility for Byrdak situation

Photoby Michael Baron
For those of you who missed it there was a but of confusion last night in regards to the bullpen.

Apparently Tim Byrdak had started to warm-up in the sixth inning but after throwing a few fastballs he sat back down.

In the next inning Terry Collins went to the mound to replace Pedro Beato, the only reliever warmed up was Bobby Parnell but as Parnell entered the field he was sent back for Byrdak.

Byrdak was seen on camera scrambling for his glove and running out to the field, he would subsequently give up a two run HR.  After the pitch Tim was seen slamming a ball into the ground from the mound.

Later Byrdak would say his frustration was with himself for getting beat on an off-speed pitch when he was only ready to throw fastballs.  Collins would accept full responsibility, that there was miss-communication as to whether Byrdak was warmed up/ready.

Pre-Game: Game 81 - New York Mets @ Detroit Tigers

The Mets will look to win their 5th straight game and sweep the Tigers this afternoon as the clubs get together for a 1 PM matinee. The Mets bats have been absolutely red hot as they have scored 52 runs over their last 4 games, a new franchise record. However, things will get a little tougher today as they face perennial Cy Young candidate Justin Verlander.

On the mound for the Mets this afternoon will be right-hander Mike Pelfrey (4-6,4.78). The right-hander is 1-6 with a 6.65 ERA in nine starts away from Citi Field, and he's been backed by one or no runs of support in seven of those games. Declared the ace of the staff with Johan Santana injured, Pelfrey has yet to live up to these high expectation. He will look to turn things around starting today against the Tigers.

On the hill for the Tigers will be right-hander Justin Verlander (10-3, 2.38). The right-hander has won six consecutive starts with a 0.72 ERA, a stretch that includes four victories at Comerica Park, where he's allowed only one run in 32.2 innings. Verlander also is 8-0 with a 1.77 ERA in 11 starts following a loss April 27. Verlander faced the Mets last year at Citi Field, and the Mets pounded him for 5 runs in only 2 innings of work.

Game time is scheduled for 1:05 PM. Here are the starting lineups:

For the (41-39) New York Mets:

1. Jose Reyes SS
2. Jason Pridie RF
3. Carlos Beltran DH
4. Daniel Murphy 3B
5. Angel Pagan CF

Short Season Rookie Ball - Brooklyn Cyclones (8-5, 2nd place) -Brooklyn was shutout by Hudson Valley last night by the score of 1-0. Designated hitter Richard Lucas went 2-4 to bring his season average up to .286.

Single-A - Savannah Sand Gnats (6-1, 1st place) - The Sand Gnats defeated Rome by the score of 5-2 yesterday. Third baseman Aderlin Rodriguez went 2-4, with 2 runs scored in the win.

Single-A Advanced - St. Lucie Mets (3-2, 3rd place) - The game between St. Lucie and Fort Myers last night was postponed due to rain.

Double-A - Binghamton Mets (28-49, 5th place) - The B-Mets lost to Erie yesterday by the score of 9-3. Left-fielder Brahiam Maldonado went 2-4 in the contest and blasted his 15th HR of the season.

Triple-A - Buffalo Bisons (35-46, 4th place ) - The Bisons defeated Lehigh Valley by the score of 7-5 yesterday. First baseman Nick Evans extended his hitting streak to 19 games as he exploded to go 5-5 in the contest. Evans is now hitting .513 (38-74) during the 19 game streak.

Price Continues To Rise On Reyes

As the Mets' season progresses, so too does the career year of Jose Reyes. Furthermore, as Reyes continues to hit, steal and defend with the best in baseball, his stock continues to rise. As a result, so does his price! Yesterday, SI's Jon Heyman wrote that he had polled a handful of baseball agents and executives to get an idea of what the consensus was on Reyes' payday this winter. Here is what he came up with:

Agent No. 1: $140 million, 7 years
Agent No. 2: $120 million, 6 years
Executive No. 1: $150 million, 7 years
Executive No. 2: $75 million, five years
Heyman's prediction: $142 million, 7 years.

While I'm not sure if those numbers narrow things down any, as these predictions range from five to seven years and from $75 to $150 million, one thing is for certain..Jose Reyes is going to get PAID this winter.

On June 11th, I wrote HERE that I thought the Mets would be able to retain Reyes for a reasonable contract guaranteed five years for $90-$100 with an option for a sixth year that would bring the total value of the deal north of $100 for sure. However, Reyes' play over the latter half of this month has convinced me that those numbers will never be enough to keep him here.

In a turn of events that will make Fred Wilpon eat his words, there will be a franchise that will offer Reyes "Carl Crawford money". I think the interesting thing will be where it comes from. By all accounts including his own words, Jose Reyes would prefer to stay in the city he has public professed his love for. As a result, would Reyes be willing to uproot his family and move them to a place like Milwaukee or San Francisco for a few million more?

I say a few million more because I fully expect the Mets to offer Reyes a legitimate contract. If I had to guess, Sandy will offer something in the six year, $110-$120 million range with an option of some sort for the seventh year that will have the total value of the deal approach those famed "Crawford" numbers. I believe the Mets can afford that contract, but I also believe the Mets will be hoping for a hometown discount though, and will approach the negotiations as such.

Whether or not such a discount is on the table remains to be seen, but if Jose would be willing to sign for that type of deal I would do it in a heartbeat. What do you think? Do you think Reyes is worth that much money? Would you pay Reyes $20 million annually to keep him in town, or would you start looking for the next once in a life time player who can do just about anything at will on a baseball diamond?

Post Game: Mets Defeat Tigers 16-9

The New York Mets have scored 52 runs over the course of the past 4 games, adding 16 tonight to push their winning streak to 4 games while winning their second consecutive road series to push their record to 2 games over .500 for the first time since they opened the season 3-1.

Chris Capuano(7-7, 4.27 ERA) picked up the victory tonight despite struggling through his 5 innings of work. Capuano had retired the first 8 batters he faced before allowing a solo homer to Ryan Raburn. The Tigers would tack on 2 more HR's against Capuano--managing to score 5 runs off of him before being pulled after 5. The Mets didn't need to worry about making up ground, though, as they scored in the first and never looked back.

Jose Reyes opened the game with a single, took second on a wild throw, stole third base and later scored on a bases loaded triple by Scott Hairston. The Mets would take a 3-0 lead before they began the second and never relinquished it. Every Mets starter had a multi-hit game with the exception of Jason Bay--who drew 4 walks. Bay has hit for a .282 average coming into tonight's game and has raised his average to .236 on the year.

Ronny Paulino hit in the cleanup spot for the first time as a New York Met and delivered in a huge way. Paulino continued to mash lefties as he went 4-6 with a RBI and raised his average to .346 on the year. Daniel Murphy, who hit 8th tonight for the first time this year also came up big--going 2-5 and driving in 4 with 2 consecutive 2 RBI singles. Murphy has been on fire and is hitting just a tick under .300.

Angel Pagan was retired for the first time this series after going 3-3 to start the game and has raised his average to .263 on the year. After struggling mightily in Texas, Pagan had a 4 RBI night in what appears to be a breakout series.

The Mets are now just 5 games back of the Wild Card leading Atlanta Braves with only the St. Louis Cardinals and Arizona Diamondbacks in between. With the Pittsburgh Pirates loss tonight the Mets passed them in the Wild Card standings. The Phillies had a big win against the Red Sox, though, and the Mets are still sitting 9 1/2 back in the National League East.

The Mets will look to extend their winning streak to 5 games tomorrow as they face Cy Young candidate Justin Verlander. A win tomorrow would set the high water mark for the Mets record on the season.

Pre-Game 80: It's All About The Climb

It wasn't that long ago, was it? After having an incredible opening week, many people were clamoring for Willie Harris to be playing every day--whether it be left field, second base--it didn't matter, people wanted him on the field. He ultimately came down to earth and now plays sporadically--but how is this relevant?

The last time Willie Harris was openly embraced by Mets fans the team had won 3 in a row to push their record to 3-1 on the year. Unfortunately, that was the last time the Mets were 2 games above .500 this season. The 5-13 start seemed insurmountable and yet on June 29th the team sits 1 game over .500 with the opportunity to give themselves some breathing room for the first time in over 2 months.

The Mets will look to extend their winning streak to 4 games tonight as they'll send Chris Capuano(6-7,3.99 ERA) to the mound in their effort to do so. Capuano has arguably been the Mets most consistent starter this year and has pitched to a 3.13 ERA over his last 10 starts. Capuano departed after only 6 innings during his last outing as a precautionary measure to protect his side.

The Detroit Tigers will counter with the former Yankee Phil Coke(1-7, 4.32 ERA). Coke has pitched much better than his record has indicated but has been unlucky in his efforts. Coke has pitched to a 5.33 ERA at Comerica Park this year and is 0-2 in those games. Coke is coming off a poor outing against Arizona in which he allowed 5 runs over only 4 2/3 innings.

Ronny Paulino will bat 4th for the 3rd time in his career tonight as Lucas Duda will receive a day off against the left handed Coke.

On Wright returning and upsetting the flow...

There has been a significant amount of discussion within the Mets blogosphere comparing David Wright's return to that of Carlos Beltran's return last season.  Other then coming back from injuries I don't think the two situations could be any different.

Let me start by addressing the Beltran situation of a year ago and why it is different from Wright this year.

There were some Beltran supporters who were concerned with him rushing back and risking injuring himself even further in a non-competitive year.   While many focus on the negative in regard to Beltran, this was a completely supportive stance that viewed Beltran as a valuable asset.

Then there were those who recognized the year Angel Pagan was having and that he had emerged as legitimate everyday player.  There was no discussion amongst the Mets hierarchy in regard to Beltran moving, center field was his position upon return which lead to the up setting the apple cart debate.  It didn't help that when he did return, he struggled offensively and didn't have the range for the position.

Finally, it must be discussed since it was an argument a small portion of the fan base used against him.  Whether it's fair or not ( which I don't think it is), for some reason a portion of the fan base has always viewed Beltran in a negative light.  They consider him a selfish, lackadaisical player who lacks a competitive edge and it's that laid back approach that rubs off on his teammates.

I couldn't disagree more with this opinion of Betran, if anything I think he may have been given some advice by Boras to play it safe in the middle years of his career but that purely specualtion on my part.  In my opinion Beltran has been the most talented and clutch player on this team and any discussion of him being laid back or a negitive influence is silly.

David Wright is just entering the prime of his career and from what I've read the injury he's returning from once healed doesn't present the risks that a knee injury does.  While Murphy has shown he can hit in the major leagues and Justin Turner has been a pleasant surprise neither is of the caliber player of David Wright.  In fact I would say both are solid bench players who could fill in as starters, Murphy still doesn't have a position and I think were seeing the league catch up to Turner. While the team has been doing well it's not on any level that you wouldn't want to upset the flow by potentially adding a 30/30 guy.

Being worried about David Wright returning and the impact he will have is like being worried about having too many presents on Christmas...

Short Season Rookie Ball - Brooklyn Cyclones (8-4, 2nd place) - Brooklyn defeated Aberdeen last night by the score of 1-0. Starting pitcher Carlos Vazquez went 5 innings and allowed only 2 hits in the contest. Three Cyclone relievers combined to throw 4 shutout innings for the win.

Single-A - Savannah Sand Gnats (5-1, 1st place) - Savannah beat Rome by the score of 5-3 last night. Designated Hitter Darrell Ceciliani went 1-3, with a 2B, 2 RBI, and 2 BB in the win.

Terry's Team Remains In The Hunt

Last night in Detroit the team did a number of things they haven't done in years.  Not one, but two grand slams being the major headline, the team also climbed above .500 for the first time since April 6th of this season when they were 3-2.  While this is an accomplishment in and of itself, they still have plenty of work to do if this season is to be considered a success.

Without the likes of David Wright and Ike Davis, Mets manager Terry Collins, who was a controversial hire this spring has performed more than admirably as he has gotten the absolute most out of his players to date.  Consistently juggling his line up in order to incorporate and/or work around what is an admittedly weak bench, Collins has instilled the team first approach he spoke of this spring.  Not once this season has a player spoken out about playing time or a lack thereof.  While there have been lapses in judgement over the first 79 games, we haven't even really seen a player take a play off, as hustle has been the norm amongst this group.

As June comes to a close, Terry's Mets currently find themselves a game above .500 and 5.0 games back, with three teams standing between them and the Wild Card leading Braves.  As I mentioned previously, there is still a great deal of work to be done.  Until recently, the Mets offense had been manufacturing just enough run to steal games, as Terry has called for a plethora of bunts, hit and runs and straight steals this year in order to make up for runs not captured via the long ball.  The teams recent swing through the AL Central has seen the bats come alive as they have clipped of 36 runs in their last three games.  As Collin's mentioned in his post game press conference, the team's lineup would become that much more formidable should Jason Bay, who has been a project of Terry's and really the only player Terry hasn't been able to work production out of, could get it going.

Going forward, Collins will have the continue to deal with the absence of Ike Davis, who appears to be lost for they year.  David Wright however, seems as though he will rejoin the team eventually.  His return will be a welcomed addition with the recent struggles of Justin Turner and will provide an emotional spark the team could use to go on the run needed to really climb back into the Wild Card picture.  Collins will also likely have to work around the departure of other key players like Carlos Beltran and Francisco Rodriguez who may leave by trade over the next month.  In doing so, he will have to conjure up more magic in order to elicit every drop of production he can from their replacements.

While its would be premature to anoint Collins as a manager of the year candidate, he has put his troops in a position to succeed this season and accomplished a great deal with the minimal hand he's been dealt.  He has turned what was a lifeless, seemingly uninvested team over the last several years, into a scrappy club without an ounce of quit in them.  As does the team as a whole, Collins has a lot of work to do over the second half of the season, but if he can help the players find their stride and continue to come together he will have more than proven Sandy Alderson's first big decision as Mets' general manager was a good one.

Cecil Sees Mets as option for Prince...

Let me preface this by saying that Cecil Fielder isn't close with his son Prince which he admits to in the article.  So this is as much speculation By Cecil as it would be by any of us, except that maybe Cecil knows Prince's personality and maybe he knows that his son desires the big city lights.

Prince's agent is Scott Boras so this will more then likely come down to who is willing to pay him the most, which I think automatically rules the Mets out.  In his last year of control arbitration was avoided with a year 15.5 M contract.

The 27 y/o 1B is a lefty hitter, in his seven year career he's averaged 38 HRs, 107 RBIs, 32 doubles and 90 walks per season along with a BA of .281.

For those saying what about Ike Davis, Cecil seems to have a plan...

The elder Fielder said he would shuttle Davis to a corner outfield spot to make room for Prince, whom he expects to be enamored by the big city, saying, "If you want to get in the bright lights, you've got to come to New York." source Daily News

Mets Whip Tigers In Grand Fashion

For the fourth time since April 7th, the Mets entered tonight with the opportunity to rise above .500. This would not be like those other nights as they would win and rise to 40-39 on the year. The Mets would stike early and often in a game that would include Josh Thole's first home run of the year, a second consecutive four-hit game for Jose Reyes and mulitple Mets grand slams in route to a 14-3 win.

The Mets stuck for two runs in the top of the first when Jose Reyes led the game off with a single, followed by back-to-back doubles by Daniel Murphy and Angel Pagan later in the inning. RA Dickey would dance in and out of trouble for the first three innings before the Mets broke things open in the fourth.

After recording two consecutive outs, the next seven Mets would reach safely. Josh Thole started the rally with his first home run this season and Jason Bay would close the inning out with the franchise's first grand slam since August 2009 (a span of 280 AB) which extended the Mets' lead to 9-0.

There would be more where that came from, as the Mets picked up where they left off in the fifth. Carlos Beltran would deposit a Daniel Schlereth pitch over the left field wall for the Mets second grand slam in six batters as they extended their lead to 13-0.

Staked to a 13 run lead, RA Dickey would allow a two run home run to Austin Jackson in the fifth and a solo shot to Andy Dirks in the seventh as the game progressed. The Mets would get one of those runs back in the eighth when Justin Turner singled in Angel Pagan to secure the final score of 14-3.

Tomorrow night at 7:05 pm, the Mets continue their series against the Tigers when Chris Capuano (6-7) faces off against Phil Coke (1-7).

Game Notes:
- The Mets last had a mulitiple grand slam game on 7/16/06 when Cliff Floyd and Carlos Beltran connected in the same inning.
- Jose Reyes hit his 15th triple of the season, in the process of going 4 for 4, raising his NL leading average to .349.
- The Mets have now had combined for 49 hits, while scoring 36 runs in their past three games.
- The Mets had been out slammed 18-0 since Angel Pagan's 8/1/09 grand slam.

Injury Updates: Wright, Niese & Santana

David Wright, who was cleared for baseball activities last week has been progressing. ESPN's Adam Rubin reported this afternoon that Wright is expected to begin hitting off of a tee on Wednesday. His return is still expected to be weeks away as he still needs to return to playing shape after more than a month of no activity whatsoever.

Jonathan Niese was examined by doctors at a local Detroit hospital. Dave Lennon, of the New York News Day has reported that Niese was diagnosed with tachycardia (rapid heartbeat) and will have to wear a Holter monitor for the next 24 hours. At that time, doctors will assess those readings and hopefully have a better understanding of what happened to Jon in the heat in Arlington, TX. It is unknown if this will effect his next scheduled start.

Also reported by ESPN's Adam Rubin, Johan Santana's scheduled throwing session off of a mound in Port St. Lucie, FL was cancelled this afternoon. No, he has not experienced a set back. Mother nature simply got in the way, as an afternoon rain system postponed his workout.

Pre-Game: Game 79 - New York Mets @ Detroit Tigers

The Mets continue their interleague schedule tonight as they open a 3 game series with the Tigers in Detroit, Michigan. The Mets are coming off an impressive series win against the defending American League champion Texas Rangers which saw them score 22 runs over the last 2 games. The Mets are now 5-1-1 in their last 7 series. The Tigers are also playing well as they have won 3 in a row and have moved ahead of the Indians to claim 1st place in the AL Central. With a win tonight the Mets will move above the .500 for the first time since April 6th (3-2).

On the mound for the Mets will be right-handed knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (3-7, 3.76). Dickey is 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA in his last three starts overall, but pitched well enough to win in Wednesday's 3-2, 13-inning victory over Oakland. He yielded one run and three hits with nine strikeouts in eight innings, only to see closer Francisco Rodriguez blow the save in the 9th.

Taking the hill for the Tigers will be right-hander Rick Porcello (6-5, 4.50). Porcello really struggled in his last 2 outing as he has allowed 14 ER over 7.2 IP during those starts. After bursting on to the seen as a rookie by winning 14 games in 2009, Porcello has come back to earth in 10' and 11' by only going 16-17. Porcello has never faced the Mets in his career.

Game time is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Here are the starting lineups:

For the (39-39) New York Mets:

1. Jose Reyes SS
2. Willie Harris DH
3. Carlos Beltran RF
4. Daniel Muprhy 1B

Mets Once Again Look To Get Over .500 Hump

We've been here before.. four times in fact.  Entering tonight's game the Mets once again have the opportunity to move above .500 for the first time since the fifth game of the season.  Today, seventy-eight games later the Mets rest at even on the year.  Thirty-nine wins and thirty-nine losses with all the great play and mediocrity to go along with it.

All is not lost though.  Sitting only five games out of the wild card the Mets remain within striking distance of a playoff run.  However, as the midway point of the season nears the opportunities to take the next step and become that team poised to make a playoff run may be coming to a close. As the rumors begin to swirl in regards to possible destinations for the likes of Carlos Beltran and Francisco Rodriguez, this clubhouse must know there is a premium on the next few weeks of baseball.

The Mets have drawn two division leaders to close out inter-league play.  Probably not the ideal way to go about things, but nonetheless the Mets must play the hand they've been dealt.  Thats what they've been doing thus far this year.  This Mets team has not necessarily been held back by injuries to core components of the lineup and this aceless starting staff has had its ups and downs, but has more or less kept the team in contention.

So once again, Groundhog's Day is here and we all write posts and articles like we have before on several other occasions this season.  Will this be the time that the Mets move forward, or is another slump in the making against the likes of the Tigers and Yankees.  Such a slump might make sense, but little else about this season has made sense, so why start now?

Rumor: Rangers Have Interest In Mets' Beltran

According to Sports Illustrated writer Jon Heyman, the Texas Rangers are interested in Mets' RF Carlos Beltran if he should happen to become available between now and the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline.

Analysis: The Rangers got to see Beltran first hand this weekend and had to be impressed with what they saw. During the 3 game series Beltran went 4-12 with a 3B, 5 RBI and 3 runs scored. The fact that Beltran has played in 76 of the Mets 78 games played this year should ease all concern of any health related problems.

A trade between the Mets and Rangers for Beltran makes plenty of sense. While the Mets have been more competitive than most people thought thus far in 2011 (39-39, 4.5 GB in Wild Card), they are far from a championship contender and ridding themselves of the remainder of Beltran's contract while picking up some talent in return would be a wise decision by the organization. Beltran would fit in perfectly in an already stacked Rangers offense. If they so choose, the Rangers could slide Nelson Cruz over to LF, Josh Hamilton to CF, and let Beltran roam the area in RF. Imagine Beltran's run production in that lineup? That would be something to see. I recommend you keep an eye on this rumor as it seems to make plenty of sense for each involved club.

Post-Game Wrap-Up: Gee Whiz, .500 Again

The Mets defeated the Texas Rangers by the score of 8-5.

Games Stats:
  • Dillon Gee improved his record to 8-1 by going 6 innings, while allowing 3 ER, 8 hits, 2 BB, and struck out 1.
  • Jose Reyes went 4-5 and hit his 14th 3B of the year. Today was Reyes' 39 multi-hit game of the year.
  • Daniel Murphy went 3-4, with 2 runs scored and an RBI.
  • Ronny Paulino was 2-4, with 2 runs scored.
Pitching Analysis:

Dillon Gee won his 8th game of 2011 today despite not being very sharp in front of his friends and family. Gee grew up 45 minutes away from the Arlington area and picked up the win despite not having his good stuff. After the Mets gave him a quick 1-0 lead in the Top of the 1st, he quickly relinquished the lead by giving up 4 consecutive hits including a solo HR to Michael Young. The Mets offense however was on top of its game once again and gave Gee enough run support to pick up the win.

The Mets middle relief was perfect as Pedro Beato, Tim Brydak, and Jason Isringhausen combined for 2 perfect innings. Francisco Rodriguez however struggled and made the Mets sweat by giving up 2 runs in the 9th before finally retiring the side for the Mets series win.

The Mets defense was fantastic today making several eye opening plays despite committing 2 errors. Jose Reyes made a tremendous play in the Bot of the 2nd that saved 2 runs and completely changed the tone of the game.

Offensive Analysis:

Jose Reyes had another fantastic game at the plate by going 4-5 and recording his league leading 14th triple of the year. His average is once again over the .340 mark (.341) and he also recorded his 28th stolen base. Despite only going 1-4, Carlos Beltran had a huge 2-run single with 2 outs in the 2nd to make to give the Mets a 5-2 lead. Daniel Murphy had another 3-hit game and raised his average to .296 on the year.

The Mets have reached the .500 mark once again and will look to go above that mark for the first time since they were 3-2 during the first week of the season as they open a 3 game series VS the Tigers in Detroit on Tuesday.

Pre-Game: Game 78 - New York Mets VS Texas Rangers

The Mets and Rangers will play the rubber game of their 3 game series this afternoon at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Texas. After losing game 1 of the series by the score of 8-1, the Mets offense jumped out in front of Rangers young starter Alexi Ogando by putting of a 3 spot before the Rangers even came to bat. They then kept adding on runs in support of yesterday's winning pitcher Jon Niese en route to a 14-5 win. Niese had to leave the game after 5.1 innings pitched due to what Mets trainers deemed an irregular heartbeat and will be examined by doctors in Detroit tomorrow.

Taking the mound for the Mets in hopes of securing the series win will be right-hander Dillon Gee (7-1, 3.21). Gee suffered his first loss of the season last Tuesday night as he was uncharacteristically wild as he walked 6 Oakland A's. This will be a homecoming for Gee who grew up only 45 minutes away from Arlington. The rookie has never faced his home town Rangers and will catch a little break as Rangers MVP OF Josh Hamilton will sit todays game out.

On the mound for the Rangers will be left-hander Derek Holland (6-2, 4.69). The left-hander bounced back from two bad starts by allowing only 3 runs in 7.1 IP on monday while picking up the win to improve to 3-0, with a 6.10 ERA at home this season. Holland has the best runs support in the league when pitching at home as the Rangers score an average 8.92 runs per game for him.

Post Game: Running Wild In The Alamo

Off the heels of a big loss to the Texas Rangers last night in Arlington, Texas, the Mets fired back and took a huge victory this afternoon, defeating the Rangers 14-5 behind a good effort from Jonathan Niese and a career day for Lucas Duda.

Jonathan Niese(7-6, 3.67 ERA) boosted his record to 1 game over .500 but lasted only 5 2/3 innings before being removed with "irregular heartbeat". The hot climate in Arlington today, 94 degrees an hour into the game, is said to be a contributing factor. According to WFAN the trainers cooled Niese off in the cold baths and Texas doctors confirmed the diagnosis. He should be able to make his next scheduled start.

Lucas Duda led the charge on offense today, posting a career high 4 hits with 3 doubles while driving in 5 runs. Duda's previous career high had been 2 hits and with the effort today boosted his average to .228 on the year. It appears that as Duda receives more frequent playing time his offensive production has become more consistent with his minor league numbers.

Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, Josh Thole, Ruben Tejada and Willie Harris all also had multi-hit days with Beltran driving in 2 with an RBI triple that got the Mets kick started in the first inning. After his average almost dropped under .200 in early May, Willie Harris has hit .400 over his last 10 games/appearances and is hitting .313 away from Citi Field this year.

The rout of Alexi Ogando represents his third consecutive loss and first at home this season. While the Mets failed to record a home run the offense was able to contribute in the spacious ballpark. Bobby Parnell and DJ Carrasco finished Niese's effort although the two allowed 3 runs over the final 3 1/3 innings.

The New York Mets will look to take the rubber match in Arlington tomorrow afternoon at 3:05 PM with Dillon Gee looking to bounce back from his first loss of 2011.

Pre-Game 77: New York Mets @ Texas Rangers

The New York Mets will look to avoid dropping to 3 games under .500 today as they oppose the defending American League Champion Texas Rangers in Arlington, Texas at 4:10 PM. Coming off the heels of an essential blowout loss last night, the Mets will look to bounce back and remain within the 1-2 game deficit of .500 that they've been holding onto for several weeks.

Jonathan Niese(6-6, 3.70) will take the mound for the Amazings this afternoon coming off of his first bad start since May. Niese lasted only 4 innings while surrendering 4 runs and 8 hits to the Los Angeles Angels at Citi Field. Terry Collins noted a potential reason for Niese's struggles was the lack of curveballs thrown, which had attributed to much of his success over the past month. He'll look to get back on track today while looking for his 6th win of the season.

Niese and the Mets will oppose an early American League Rookie of the Year contender in Alexi Ogando(7-2, 2.66). Ogando has lost both of his previous two outings after starting the year an impressive 7-0. Ogando allowed only 1 run in 5 innings against the Atlanta Braves during his last outing while still taking the loss but was roughed up by the Yankees on June 14th, being bombed for 6 runs in only 1 2/3 innings. At home Ogando has been untouchable this year, already 5-0 while posting a 1.91 ERA.

Jason Bay and Justin Turner will both sit today due to minor injuries. Bay is struggling with a stiff neck and Turner's thumb "flared up" according to Adam Rubin.

New York Mets Starting Lineup:
1. Jose Reyes SS
2. Willie Harris DH
3. Carlos Beltran RF
4. Daniel Murphy 3B
5. Angel Pagan CF

Who Will Step In When Krod Steps Out?

With the news this week that Fransisco Rodriguez would be willing to become a set up man if he were traded to a contending team with a proven closer, the rumor mill is beginning to churn.  Of the potential players who could be headed out of town, the obnoxious vesting option that Krod has for next year, which would net him $17.5 million, most likely places him at the head of the line.  What the Mets might get in return could be minimal as a result of that very same option, making his departure a salary dump more than anything else.

If the Mets do in fact trade away their proven closer, the question becomes who will step in.  Amongst those on the roster, Jason Isringhausen and Pedro Beato seem like the best fit, with Bobby Parnell coming in a distant third in my opinion.  I concentrate on those currently residing on the roster because it would appear unlikely that the team would receive a major league ready closer in return with Krod's contract situation.

Jason Isringhausen would be the immediate choice if I ran the team.  He has been solid this season.  Much better than anyone assumed when he showed up for an open tryout this spring.  Furthermore, he currently sits with 293 saves and while Izzy hasn't been a career Met, he does seem to hold a semi-special place in the hearts of fans.  The pursuit of 300 saves may be something that the front office feels could sell a few tickets as the season comes to a close.  This of course is assuming that the overachieving, aged reliever isn't dealt himself.

Should Izzy be headed out of town as well, the ball would likely fall to Pedro Beato.  After having a flawless April, three weeks on the disabled list threw Beato into a tailspin that would see his ERA climb to 4.63 before he's leveled out in recent weeks.  Whats important to note about Beato is that he has the prototypical closer 'stuff.  His high to mid nineties fastball and slicing off speed pitches make him a tough opponent late in the game.  Having less than one year in the big leagues would pose an obstacle as his maturity level will certainly be tested, but now may be as good a time as any to have him tested in the role.

Despite what has been a weak bullpen throughout most of the season, the team does have options should Krod depart.  With nearly half a season remaining, it would be possible for Izzy to collect his 300th save and then turn the ball over to Beato in an attempt to get him ready for next season.  These are just a few more decisions that will most likely come across the desk of Sandy Alderson and Terry Collins over the next thirty days or so.  Change is coming...who do you think will be the better fit?

Post-Game Wrap-Up: Pelfrey Struggles In First, Offense Can't Bounce Back

The Mets lost to the Rangers by the score of 8-1 tonight in Arlington, Texas.

Game Notes:
  • Mike Pelfrey lasted 6 innings and gave up 4 ER, 3 of which came in the 1st inning on a Josh Hamilton RBI single and a 2-run HR by Adrian Beltre. Pelfrey is now 1-7 on the road this year, opposed to 3-0 at home.
  • Manny Acosta came on in the 7th inning to relieve Pelfrey and got touched up for a 2-run HR from the Rangers Michael Young that seemingly put the game out of reach (6-1 Rangers). Then to add insult to injury Josh Hamilton got a hold of a Manny Acosta fastball that landed over the RF wall for his 7th HR of the season.
  • Ruben Tejada drove in the Mets only run of the evening with an RBI single in the 5th.
  • Jason Bay had a nice night, going 4-3 with 3 singles.
Game Analysis: Mike Pelfrey's road woes continued tonight as he troubled terribly with his pitch location, especially in the 1st inning. His sinker was being left up over the plate all night and Adrian Beltre took advantage by launching a 2-HR in the first. Then after getting out of bases loaded jam in the 2nd, it seemed as if Pelfrey was settling into a groove. However, he got touched up for a 2-out RBI single from Elvis Andrus in the 4th, extending the Rangers lead to 4-0. Pelfrey's inconsistencies are extremely frustrating. There are times where he looks like he finally figured things out and is ready to launch his career, but then gets lit up and falls into a funk. I'm starting to think that Pelfrey will never be more than a number 4 starter at best.

The Mets who only had 2 hits after 4 innings against Matt Harrison had a change to get back into the game in the 5th and 6th innings. After a run had already scored int he 5th and runners on 1st and 2nd, Jose Reyes hit a sharp grounder to 3B. Beltre however was playing the line and turned it into an easy 5-5-3 double play to end the inning. Then in the 6th the Mets had runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs, but were unable to capitalize as the inning ended on a line drive by Ronny Paulino right at Ian Kinsler.

Why is Manny Acosta still on this team? He has been terrible since being re-called earlier in the year and it showed tonight. Acosta gave up 4 ER and 5 hits over an 1.2 IP. I would not be surprised to see him demoted to Triple-A after this game. At least we could all only hope.

The Mets who are now 5-11 in games in which they come into play 1 game below .500 will look to get back to that point as they take on the Rangers in game 2 of their series tomorrow afternoon. Game time is 4:10 PM.

Pre-Game: Game 76 - New York Mets VS Texas Rangers

The Mets continue their interleague schedule as they hit the road for a 3 games series with the Rangers in Arlington. The Rangers have been able to maintain the lead in the AL West despite injuries to several key players including OF Josh Hamilton and OF Nelson Cruz. The Mets will be looking to reach the .500 mark once again as they visit Arlington for the first time since 2003.

On the mound tonight for the Mets will be right-hander Mike Pelfrey (4-5, 4.70). Pelfrey has been very inconsistent this year. When he has his bad stuff he is terrible, but when he has his good stuff like he did in his last start he can be dominating. Against the Angels at home last Saturday night, Pelfrey tossed a 5-hit complete game shutout in what was by far his best performance of the year. He has struggled terribly this year on the road, sporting a 1-5 record with a 6.75 ERA away from Citi Field.

On the mound for the Rangers tonight will be left-hander Matt Harrison (5-6, 3.16). Harrison has been dominate in interleague play this year as he is 1-0, with a microscopic 0.61 ERA. Tonight will be Harrison's first career start against the Mets.

Game time is scheduled for 8:05 PM. Here are the starting lineups:

For the (37-38) New York Mets:

1. Jose Reyes SS
2. Justin Turner 3B
3. Carlos Beltran RF
4. Jason Bay LF
5. Scott Hairston DH
6. Ronny Paulino C
7. Angel Pagan CF
8. Daniel Muprhy 1B
9. Ruben Tejada SS

R. A. Dickey P

For the (40-36) Texas Rangers:

1. Ian Kinsler 2B
2. Elvis Andrus SS
3. Josh Hamilton CF
4. Adrian Beltre 3B
5. Michael Young DH
6. Nelson Cruz RF
7. Mitch Moreland 1B
8. Yorvit Torrealba C
9. David Murphy LF

Matt Harrison P

LET'S GO METS!

Should the Mets bring up a DH - go with one less reliever

The Mets will play the next six games in Amercan League parks which means they will be playing with a DH.  That will force them to play with one less bench player and put a struggling hitter in the line-up.  The best offensive line-up would probably be to use both catchers, with one at the DH and the other behind the plate, but that risks forcing them to use an emergency catcher and I'm not sure who that is since Hu went down.  Tejada is hitting just over .200 in the last ten games, Scott Hairston seems the most likely DH due to his power potential but is only hitting .258 on the season and both Pridie/Harris are hitting below .240. Using Pridie, Tejada or Harris in the starting line-up removes a defensive replacement late in a close AL game.

So for the next two series should the Mets play with one less reliever and bring up a potential power bat to DH ?

They could call up hot hitting 3B Zach Lutz ( .318) let him start at 3B, move Turner to 2B and Murphy to 1B with Duda to DH.   Or journeyman catcher Salomon Manriquez ( BA .306) let Thole catch, Paulino DH and Manriguez is your back-up catcher and late inning pinch hitter.  Finally they could bring up 1B/DH Valentino Pascucci with his 9 HRs, 16 doubles and 46 RBIs, Val has always been seen as a DH so bring him up to do so.

It would cost us D.J. Carrasco or Manny Acosta, both are pretty far down the depth chart and are being used mostly in mop-up duty or to give others a rest in lopsided wins.  Acosta with his 7.94 ERA as a one inning ROOGY would be my pick, between Krod, Izzy, Parnell and Beato his innings can easily be covered.  Carrasco going multiple innings gives him a leg up on Acosta despite his 5.94 ERA, you send him down again and Beato is the long-man.

In the end if it was my roster I would send down Acosta and recall Lutz, unless my pen got over used I would keep this roster configuration through inter-league play and then when the ten day window was up recall Acosta if he was still with the team ( waivers or FA).  If I needed a reliever earlier or Acosta left, you still have Iggy, O'Connor, Thayer and De La Torre to pick from....

Fulmer agrees-Depo knack for finding pitching...

The Mets supplemental first round pick tweeted that he agreed to terms with the Mets.  Fulmer was ranked as the 45th best arm in the draft and the Mets selected him at the 44th pick.  I have to wonder if his signing will have an impact on first round picks Nimmo's view of his college team.  The Mets knew going into the draft Nimmo was looking for somewhere around 3M in a signing bonus to forgo college but will the top picks stance weaken knowing his potential college team ( Arkansas) has just lost one of it's stud pitchers to the Mets...

Here's an exciting part of this draft it was scouted, evaluated and run by Paul Depodesta.  In a NJ.com must read article they discuss Depo's reputation for finding under the radar pitches.  The article is mainly about Depo finding Chris Capuano but I'm excited to see what comes from his draft picks, just look at the Dodgers and Padres selections when he was there.

“DePodesta has built up a reputation,” one American League executive said, “as a guy who can unearth good and undervalued pitchers. When you see a guy like Capuano pitching well, we nod our heads and acknowledge that Paul did his homework again.” source NJ.com

News: Wright Cleared to Resume Baseball Activities

Shortly after the Mets 4-1 win over the Oakland A's, Mets GM Sandy Alderson announced that David Wright was examined by doctors today at the Hospital for Special Surgery and has been cleared to resume baseball activities. Wright, who was been on the DL since mid-May with a stress fracture in his lower back will head to Port St. Lucie Florida tomorrow to begin his rehab assignment.

Post-Game Wrap-Up: Capuano Dominate In Win

The Mets took the rubber game of their 3 game series with the Oakland Athletics by the score of 4-1 today at Citi Field.

Game Notes:

  • Chris Capuano was fantastic over his 6 innings of work allowing only 5 hits while not walking a single Athletic. He also struck out 7 A's en route to picking up his 6th win and lowered his ERA to 3.99.
  • Daniel Murphy was 3-4, with an RBI.
  • Jose Reyes had yet another multiple hit, going 2-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored.
  • Francisco Rodriguez rebounded from two consecutive blown save opportunities to convert his 20th save of the season.
Analysis: Going into the 2011 season Sandy Alderson knew he was strapped for cash which would force him to go after players with low risk high reward potential. His choices were right-hander Chris Young and left-hander Chris Capuano. While the acquisition of Young has not panned (only 4 GS), Chris Capuano has been absolutely fantastic for this ball club as he has solidified a rotation that was much in question coming into the season. It seems as if every time out Capuano give the Mets a quality start.

I was surprised that manager Terry Collins decided to go with Pedro Beato for 2 innings for the second consecutive game. Beato wound up on the DL earlier in the season after a 3 inning relief outing against the Phillies, so I thought Collins would want to stay away from overworking Beato. Hopefully his arm will recover and he experiences just the usual soreness.

The Mets wrapped up their homestand VS the 2 AL West teams by going 3-3. They will now hit the road for a very tough road trip as they face the Texas Rangers and the Detroit Tigers. Once again, the club is only 1 game below .500. This upcoming road trip can prove to be a huge stepping stone for the ball club if they can be successful.

Lutz doing well is it time for a call-up

With the Mets giving Ruben Tejeda a day off because he's slumping, which has resulted in Turner moving back to 2B and Murphy playing third, I'm left wondering who else could fill in at 3B.  Tejada has just five hits in his last 10 games ( 33 AB) for a .152 BA.

I like Turner's bat but it seems like he's very slow to his left resulting in too many easy grounds balls through the hole between 3B/SS.  Maybe he guards the line too closely but whatever the reason, it seems like too many ground balls are getting through.  Ideally I think Turner would fit best at 2B where his limited range wouldn't be as much of a liability and his bat could remain in the line-up.

As far as Murphy, I think the perfect position for him is as a bench player/ pinch hitter.  Murphy has a proven major league bat and when you have your regular line-up in place, slipping Murph in is ok but when you have more then one starter out I think Murphy's defense is too much of a liability.  I just don't like what I've seen of Murph at 3B, I know it's his natural position but he doesn't have the arm strength and his reaction time for the hot corner is slow.  I don't mind using him on the right side but if he's playing first then Tejada needs to be at 2B and if he's at 2B then it would be when Davis returns.  Right now with so many starters out, in my book Murph is my primary pinch hitter and starting in a spot I have a defensive replacement ( 2B- Tejada) late in close games.

So as I started this post, who could play 3B allowing Turner to move back to 2B and Murphy to the bench, there is only one answer Zach Lutz.  Two weeks ago I did an update on who could be recalled from Buffalo and Lutz topped the list, the problem at the time was that he only had 17 games under his belt after coming off an injury.  The 25 y/o, 2007 5th round pick has been slowed his entire career by injuries and I'm sure the org. has been in no hurry with David Wright ahead of him.  Lutz has remained healthy and his bat has been hot as well, overall he's batting .329 with a .387 OBP, .484 Slg. and .871 OPS. In his last ten games .324 with two doubles, two home runs, 6 RBIs and 5 walks.  The righty against lefties has even more impressive numbers BA .385, .484 OBP, .692 Slg. and 1.176 OPS.

I've heard Lutz described as a 3B version of Duda which isn't very promising defensively so I wanted to compare the fielding numbers and see where he stands, since not many have seen much of him.  Lutz lifetime MiLB 3B fielding pct. .943, David Wright .944,Turner .923 and  Murphy .919 ( these are minor league Fld. %).

Pre-Game: Game 75 - Oakland A's VS New York Mets

The Mets and A's will play the rubber match of their 3 game series in a matinee affair at Citi Field. After Francisco Rodriguez could not close the door on what would have been R.A. Dickey's 4th win of the season, Justin Turner saved the day in the Bottom of the 13 inning as he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in the winning run. Both clubs will have to deal with fatigue as last night's game did not end until 12:15 AM.

On the mound for the Mets will be left-hander Chris Capuano (5-7, 4.29). The left-hander is 0-4 with a 9.47 ERA in his last six games (5 GS) in interleague play, and that slide continued in his last start as he was defeated by the Angels 4-3 last Friday night. The Mets offense has not provided Capuano with much run support lat home lately as they have scored only 6 runs in his last 4 home starts.

Taking the ball for the A's in the series finale will be right-hander Graham Godfrey (1-0, 4.76). This will be Godfrey's 3rd start in place of the injured Brett Anderson. In his last start, he defeated the San Francisco Giants in impressive fashion by allowing only 2 runs (1 ER) and 6 hits over 7 innings. This will be Godfrey's 4th career start.

Around The Minors From 6/22/2011

Short Season Rookie Ball - Brooklyn Cyclones (5-1, 1st place) - The Cyclones defeated Aberdeen last night by the score of 5-2. Center-fielder Travis Taijeron who was the Mets 18th round pick in this June's First Year Player Draft went 1-2, with a run scored to help Brooklyn seal the victory.
Single-A - Savannah Sand Gnats (39-30, 1st place) - The Savannah Sand Gnats were off last night.

Single-A Advanced - St. Lucie Mets (38-32, 1st place) - The St. Lucie Mets defeated Charlotte last night by the score of 7-5. Left-fielder and lead-off hitter Pedro Zapata contributed to St. Lucie's win over Charlotte by going 3-5, with a 2B and a run scored.

Double-A - Binghamton Mets (24-45, 6th place) - The B-Mets defeated Akron by the score of 3-2 last night. Newly promoted Matt Den Dekker made his season debut for the B-Mets and contributed to the win by going 1-4, with a run scored, RBI, and a SB.

Triple-A - Buffalo Bisons (30-44, 4th place ) - Buffalo lost to Durham by the score of 9-3 last night in Durham. Familiar faces Nick Evans and Mike Nickeas each went 2-4, and Val Pascucci blasted his 9th HR of the year in the lost.

Turning It Around: Mets Swipe A's 3-2 in 13

Justin Turner has been the definition of clutch this year on the injury plagued New York Mets. Second on the team's RBI list, Turner came up in the bottom of the 13th with 2 outs and the bases loaded looking to put a ball where a fielder wasn't.

Well, it turns out he didn't need to. One hit by pitch later and Justin Turner went to first as Lucas Duda scored the winning run in a marathon game that had a delayed start and a subsequent delayed ending.

R.A Dickey pitched masterfully through his 8 innings of work, allowing only 1 run on 3 hits while striking out an impressive 9. The solo home run allowed to Kurt Suzuki was the only extra base hit surrendered by Dickey en route to what appeared to be his 4th victory of the year. However, as has been the case lately: Whatever can go wrong, will. Francisco Rodriguez entered the 9th with a 1 run lead to protect coming off of his 1st blown save since the opening weekend of the season. Following a strikeout to open the inning, Coco Crisp lined a ball down the right field line that was cut off brilliantly by Carlos Beltran to hold Crisp to a double. Following another strikeout, Crisp stole third base and scored on an RBI single by Connor Jackson. The blown save was Rodriguez's 3rd of the year and second consecutive.

Justin Turner was truly the hero of the game, driving in 2 runs while giving the Mets leads twice. Following a Jose Reyes triple with 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th, Turner poked a single past Scott Sizemore that gave the Mets the lead. Coming to the plate in the bottom of the 14th, Turner was hit by the pitch that drove in Lucas Duda to ultimately end the game. Although he has seen his average drop to .271, Turner has 32 runs driven in, or more than double what Jason Bay has driven in(15).

The Mets bullpen was fantastic besides K-Rod with Jason Isringhausen, Tim Byrdak, Pedro Beato and and Bobby Parnell combining for 4 scoreless innings.

Game Notes:
Scott Hairston started the game in center field and went 1-3 before being removed to give way to Angel Pagan, who took over after pinch hitting. Pagan didn't fare well at the plate, going 0-4.

Ronny Paulino remains a reliable bat against lefties as he recorded 3 more hits tonight, raising his average to .322. While solid offensively, Paulino threw a ball away into the outfield on a stolen base attempt that allowed David DeJesus to reach 3rd. It ultimately didn't matter, though.

Jose Reyes had yet another multi-hit night, going 2-6 while recording his major league leading 13th triple of the year. Reyes has still been hitting the ball in the air far too much and has seen his average dip to a deathly .335 as a result. For those wondering, yes, that has dropped several points in the past few days.

The New York Mets will look to take the rubber match against the Oakland Athletics tomorrow afternoon at 1:10PM ET at Citi Field.

Injury Report: Ike Davis Not Improving, Surgery Possible

According to SNY's Kevin Burkhardt, Ike Davis' bone bruise is still present and has caused a cartilage issue in his ankle. He will be re-evaluated in 3 weeks and if the issue does not disappear by then, microfracture surgery is a possibility which will certainly end Ike Davis' season.

Analysis: This very frustrating. When the injury first appeared, Davis was hoping to play the next day. Now it has lingered on for 1 1/2 months and could possibly end Davis' season. This seems to happen time and time again with this organization. A player gets hurt, says they think they will play the next day, and then all of a sudden they need season ending surgery. I don't know what the cause for this is, but I can tell you it is extremely frustrating as a fan and makes it hard for us to trust any future injury reports without us holding our collective breaths.

Pre-Game: Game 74 - Oakland A's VS New York Mets

The Mets and A's will play game 2 of their 3 game series tonight from Citi Field. The Mets have feel into a little rut during this homestand, dropping 3-4 so far to 2 below .500 teams. The red hot Jose Reyes has also cooled lately as he is only 2 for his last 17.

The Mets will hand the ball to right-handed knuckleballer R.A. Dickey in hopes of snapping the teams two game losing streak. Dickey (3-7, 4.00) has a 1.33 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 27 innings while winning all four of his starts versus AL teams with the Mets. In his last outing, Dickey only last 4 innings while giving up 4 ER against Atlanta.

Gio Gonzalez (6-5, 2.69) will take the mound for Oakland tonight in hopes of extending the teams winning streak to 7 games. Gonzalez is coming off an outstanding outing his last time out as he went 6 inning and only gave up 2 ER while striking out 10 Royals'.

Game time is scheduled for 7:10 PM. Here are the starting lineups:

For the (34-40) Oakland A's:

1. Jemile Weeks 2B
2. Cliff Pennington SS
3. Coco Crisp CF
4. Hideki Matsui LF
5. Conor Jackson 1B
6. Ryan Sweeney RF
7. Kurt Suzuki C
8. Scott Sizemore 3B
9. Gio Gonzalez P

For the (35-38) New York Mets:

1. Jose Reyes SS
2. Justin Turner 3B
3. Carlos Beltran RF
4. Jason Bay LF
5. Scott Hairston CF
6. Ronny Paulino C
7. Lucas Duda 1B
8. Ruben Tejada 2B
9. R.A. Dickey P

Around The Minors From 6/21/2011

The Mets organization has promoted RHP Matt Harvey and OF Matt Den Dekker from St. Lucie Single-A to Binghamton Double-A.

Harvey was the 7th overall pick by the Mets in the 2010 First Year Player Draft. In 14 starts for Single-A St. Lucie, Harvey was 8-2, with a 2.37 ERA and has quickly shot to the top of the Mets prospect rankings.

Overlooked in the 2010 draft by Matt Harvey, the Mets also promoted OF Matt Den Dekker. Den Dekker was the Mets 5th round pick a year ago. In 263 at bats with St. Lucie, Den Dekker hit .300, with 6 HR, 36 RBI, and added 12 SB.

Short Season Rookie Ball - Brooklyn Cyclones (4-1, 1st place) - The Cyclones defeated Aberdeen last night by the score of 3-2. 22 year old SS Ismael Tijerina went 2-3 with a run scored, raising his average to .556 on the young season.

Single-A - Savannah Sand Gnats (39-30, 1st place) - The Savannah Sand Gnats were off last night.

Single-A Advanced - St. Lucie Mets (37-32, 1st place) - The St. Lucie Mets defeated Charlotte last night by the score of 9-0. Left-handed pitcher Darin Gorski allowed only 1 hit through 6 innings, pacing the Mets to the 9-0 shutout. 2B Rylan Sandoval homered twice and drove in 6 RBI. Top prospect Wilmer Flores also went 2-3, with a 2B and 2 runs scored in the win.

Double-A - Binghamton Mets (23-45, 6th place) - The B-Mets were defeated by Akron 10-8 last night. SS Jordany Valdespin had a huge night going 3-5, with a 2B, 3 RBI and 2 SB's.

Triple-A - Buffalo Bisons (30-43, 4th place ) - The Bisons defeated Durham by the score of 9-1yesterday. 3B Zach Lutz had another nice game for the Bisons as he connected for his 3rd HR of the year during his 2-5 night. Reliever Ryota Igarashi pitched 2 innings of 1 hit ball and struck out 3 Durham hitters.

Wright's Return Won't Save Mets' Season

As the Mets continue to struggle with mediocrity and the trade deadline looms, it is becoming apparent that if this group is going to contend for a playoff spot or even keep things interesting this summer, they're going to need help.  However, with the Wilpon's uncertain finances and Sandy Alderson's noted past, it seems unlikely that the front office will be in a position to add a significant piece come the end of July via trade.  As a result, the Mets may have to look for answers from within.

With so many core elements residing on the disabled list, a moral boost might now be hard to find, however if this team is going to excel this season, it would only seem necessary that the return of David Wright be a key contributor.  With news that he has begun limited baseball activities, one might assume that such an addition would be a vast improvement... but I beg to differ.

David Wright's absence has been filled by the likes of Justin Turner and Daniel Murphy.  Although some may argue beginner's luck, Turner and Murphy has performed admirable when called upon. Unlike Wright, they have not fallen victim to the strike out as frequently and as a result, provide this Mets roster with more productive outs then they're assumed captain.  Granted Wright was off to a poor start this season, but in addition to batting average, they also boast slightly higher on-base percentages and the ability to work counts the way Wright could prior to losing his way at the plate several years ago.

Furthermore, while Wright may be the undisputed leader of the team, his potential influence may have plummeted with the rise of Jose Reyes' this season.  Reyes, who has always had his teammate's attention, has recaptured the hearts of the fan base in a way neither he or David did in the past.  For the first time, at least from the fan base's standpoint, it is Wright who is seemingly expendable at the expense of another player's good fortune.

In reality, Its crazy to think that the addition of David Wright, a perennial all-star, wouldn't return immediate dividends.  Lets face it,  Wright boasts level of power that the team undoubtedly lacks at this time, but at what cost does that power come?

Whether it be the repeated strike outs, the lack of productive plate appearances, or the overall stale feeling that Wright seems to boast now, his eventual return no longer seems as though it will immediately change the direction of this team.  Will is spark excitement, absolutely.  Might the team initially react in a positive way, you bet.  However in a long run, I'm not so sure that his addition to this roster at this point in the season will yield the increasingly positive results many fans anticipate.  David has not been replaced, but its been proven this season that until his plate approach is corrected, he's not the valuable commodity he once was.

Pre-Game: Game 73 - Oakland A's VS New York Mets

The Mets will try and rebound from their series loss to the Angels by taking on another AL west foe. The ball club will open a 3 game series with the Oakland A's tonight from Citi Field. The A's are currently on a 5 game winning streak and have gotten themselves back in division contention with their recent surge. The Mets are still having trouble climbing over the .500 mark, yet remain only 4.5 games back (4 in the lost column) in the Wild Card race.

On the mound for the Mets tonight will be right-hander Dillon Gee (7-0, 2.86). Gee has been nothing short of spectacular in 2011 as he has been the anchor of the Mets rotation despite them in early May. Gee had to exit his last start early due to a rain delay but was fantastic in his brief outing, only allowing 1 hit across 4 innings.

Toeing the rubber for the A's will be left-hander Josh Outman (2-1, 3.14). Outman is coming off his best outing since undergoing Tommy John surgery as he tossed seven scoreless innings in Wednesday's 2-1 win over Kansas City, allowing four hits and two walks.

Game time is scheduled for 7:10 PM. Here are the starting lineups:

For the (33-40) Oakland A's:

1. Jemile Weeks 2B
2. Cliff Pennington SS
3. Coco Crisp CF
4. Hideki Matsui LF
5. Conor Jackson 1B
6. Ryan Sweeney RF
7. Kurt Suzuki C
8. Scott Sizemore 3B
9. Josh Outman P

For the (35-37) New York Mets:

1. Jose Reyes SS
2. Justin Turner 3B
3. Carlos Beltran RF
4. Daniel Murphy 1B
5. Angel Pagan CF
6. Jason Bay LF
7. Ronny Paulino C
8. Ruben Tejada 2B
9. Dillon Gee

Mets Must Refocus And Push Forward

The 2011 New York Mets and their batch of overachieving youngsters have scratched and clawed their way to .500 on three separate occasions.  It would appear that they will make such an event a monthly occurrence this season having completed the task on April 9th (4-4), May 20th (22-22) and most recently on June 15th (34-34).  Unfortunately, each time the Mets have achieved such a milestone they have immediately followed it up with a slump of sorts.

Their April bout with the .500 mark was followed with a ten game stretch that saw the team win only one game and quickly pushed them to a season low 5-13.  May's attempt to reach the north side of .500 wasn't as bad, as they went 3-7 over the last ten games of the month putting the team at 25-29 before going on a run in June.  It appears that this most recent attempt will be no different, seeing as the team is now 1-3 since finding itself back at .500 just last week.

Each slide has a little bit of heartbreak with it, but should the Mets not be able to find themselves once again against the visiting Oakland Athletics over the next few days, this one will undoubtedly be the worst.  After what probably should have been a sweep in Atlanta, the Mets could look forward to back-to-back series against two sub-.500 teams in the Angels and A's which could have finally pushed them over that edge.  The Angels series has come and gone.  With it, went the reasonable expectation of a cracking the .500 mark before much stiffer interleague competition heats up when the Mets visit Texas and Detroit, and then return home to face the Yankees.

And so once again, it appears that nothing will ever come easy for this franchise.  For the most part the players are new, but old habits die hard and this group is no exception to that rule.  In the past few days, the Mets watched their wild card deficit increase from 2.5 to 5 games.  Now as July looms, so too does the trade deadline.  As a result, the team cannot afford a slump that would seemingly put a legitimate playoff run out of reach and therefore bring an emphasis on rebuilding for next year.

Time is no longer on this team's side and yet they continue to walk the tightrope of mediocrity.  Terry Collins and his makeshift Mets must right the ship this week if they are to retain the benefit of the doubt from Sandy Alderson and the franchise's front office.  The Mets must find themselves on the other side of .500 in very short order or the long rumored firesale may be upon us.  The clock is ticking..the time is now.
