Pre-Game 108: New York Mets @ Washington Nationals

The New York Mets(55-52) will look to win the rubber match of their 3 game series against the Washington Nationals(50-56) this afternoon at 1:35 PM ET.

Jonathan Niese(10-8, 3.97 ERA) has already set a career high in wins this season with 10 but will look to add to that total this afternoon. Despite getting the victory during his last outing in Cincinnati, Niese was shaky at best, allowing 5 earned runs in 5 innings while failing to strike out 6 or more for the first time in 5 starts. Niese hasn't fared as well during day games, posting a 4.27 ERA in 9 starts. Niese is 2-0 in his career against the Washington Nationals in 3 starts.

Jordan Zimmermann(6-9, 3.27 ERA) has been the product of bad luck this year, pitching to a losing record despite having a great ERA. It has been a rough go at it for Zimmermann in his last 2 outings, allowing 12 earned runs in 11 2/3 innings. Zimmermann has been tough to hit during the day, posting a 2.27 ERA in 10 starts. David Wright has struggled against Zimmermann, hitting .154 in 14 plate appearances.

New York Mets Starting Lineup:
1. Jose Reyes SS
2. Justin Turner 2B
3. Daniel Murphy 1B
4. David Wright 3B
5. Angel Pagan CF

Post Game: Werth's Blast Powers Nats; Mets Lose 3-0

The New York Mets(55-52) were defeated by the Washington Nationals(50-56) to snap their 5 game winning streak powered by Jayson Werth's 3-run home run in the top of the 1st inning.

R.A Dickey(5-9, 3.77 ERA) suffered the loss, pitching 6 solid innings while allowing only 3 hits and 2 walks. Dickey's only blunder tonight came when Jayson Werth uppercut a "hanging" knuckle ball into the left field seats for a 3-run home run on his bobble head night to give the Nationals a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st. Neither team would score again. DJ Carrasco and Manny Acosta pitched the final 2 innings, managing to hold the deficit.

Yuniesky Maya(1-1, 5.40 ERA) earned the victory in his spot start for the new Arizona Diamondback Jason Marquis. Maya was extremely effective early on, changing speeds and working fast to keep the Mets without a hit for the first 3 2/3 innings before a David Wright single broke up the no-hit bid.

Boiling Points:
  • David Wright collected his 7th consecutive multi-hit game, only one shy of the Mets franchise record. Wright collected 2 singles and walked to raise his average to .280 on the year.
  • Willie Harris struck out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th inning, doing his best to channel his inner Carlos Beltran(Kidding...)
  • Jose Reyes went 0-4 but had several hard hit balls, including a bid for a 3-run home run. Reyes is hitting a "poor" .273 over his last 10 games and is just 1 for his last 11.
  • Lucas Duda also failed to record a hit, making him 0-7 in his last 2 games.
  • The team left 9 men on base and were 1-6 with runners in scoring position.
The Mets will look to take the rubber match of their series against the Nationals tomorrow afternoon at National's Park as Jon Niese will look for his 11th win of the year.

Tonight's Game - Pitching Change

This afternoon the Washington Nationals traded starting pitcher Jason Marquis to the Arizona Diamondbacks. As a result, Yunesky Maya will make the spot start for the Nationals tonight against the Mets.

Maya, who hasn't appeared for the Nationals since June 14th, is 0-1 in four starts so far this season. In those four starts, he has only made it out of the fifth inning on one occasion and currently boasts a 6.86 ERA. Maya appeared against the Mets twice last season throwing a total a ten innings in which he gave up six earned runs. He was 0-1 in those outings.

Pre-Game 107 - New York Mets @ Washington Nationals

The New York Mets(55-51) will look to win their 6th consecutive game tonight as they oppose the Washington Nationals(49-56) in the second game of their 3 game series at 7:10 PM ET in the nation's capitol.

R.A Dickey(5-8, 3.74 ERA) will look to pick up his 6th win of the season coming off of a strong outing in Cincinnati in which he allowed 2 runs in 6 2/3 innings. Dickey will be making his third start against the Nats this year, having limited the Nationals to 2 runs over 6 2/3 innings on April 27th. It's worth noting that Jayson Werth has R.A Dickey's number as he's batting .353 against Dickey with a home run in 19 plate appearances. Rick Ankiel has also managed to post 5 hits in 14 at bats against the knuckler.

Jason Marquis(8-5, 3.95 ERA) will look to continue his solid year thus far, having allowed more than 3 runs only twice in his last 10 starts. The Manhasset native has pitched much better at home this season, posting a 3.26 ERA in 8 starts. Marquis has struggled mightily against the scorching hot Jason Bay, having allowed 5 home runs in 49 plate appearances. Bay is batting .372 against Marquis lifetime with a .429 OBP.

New York Mets Starting Lineup:
1. Jose Reyes SS
2. Justin Turner 2B
3. Daniel Murphy 1B
4. David Wright 3B
5. Angel Pagan CF
6. Jason Bay LF
7. Lucas Duda RF
8. Josh Thole C

Dillon Gee - Rookie Of The Year?

Courtesy of Michael Baron
It seems as though each of the past two years the Mets have stumbled upon a few diamonds in the rough.  The 2010 season saw an outstanding campaign put together by the veteran, R.A. Dickey.  The 2011 season is no exception either, as the Mets have seemingly lucked out with the services of Jason Isringhausen, who has been superb all season and is now closing in on his 300th save.  Despite these stories of resurrected careers, the first thing the team and it's fans should take away from this season will be Dillon Gee.

Left on the outside looking in for much of the 2010 season, Gee entered spring training with his spot in Queens being no sure thing.  After a successful spring, he still didn't make the trip north with the team until April 17th due to the ability of Terry Collins to use off days and go with a four-man rotation.  Since that time however, Gee hasn't looked back.  In his 17 games started this season, Gee now sports a record of 10-3 with a 3.69 ERA. On only one occasion over that time has Gee allows more than six runs in an outing, making quality performances his norm.

When comparing him to other rookie pitchers, it may not even be close.  Vance Worley of the Phillies is a distance second right now, having pitched to a 6-1 record with a 2.02 ERA over the course of 11 games started.  Worley may also see his playing time diminish with the return of Roy Oswalt and will almost certainly be the odd man out in that rotation as the playoffs near.

Should Worley drop out of the race, the pursuit of the NL Rookie of the Year Award may come down to Dillon Gee and Atlanta first baseman, Freddie Freeman.  Batting .295 with 15 HR and 52 RBIs, Freeman is amassing an equally impressive rookie campaign and at this point looks to be Gee's fiercest competition for the award.

Unfortunately, in instances such as this it is often the player on the team which goes to the playoffs that ends up winning the award.  At this point in time, that would leave Freeman with the decided edge, but as the Mets continue to play well, if they can work their way back into contention, it may again boost Gee's chances should he continue to pitch well.  Playoffs or not, Gee is having an excellent year and should without question be in consideration for the award should his level of success continue.

Others Pick Up The Slack While Reyes Struggles

Over the course of the Mets current five-game winning streak, nearly every one has contributed in a big way. The one exception to that rule has surprisingly been Jose Reyes, who has cooled off considerably in recent days. Here are some production numbers for the past five games:

Jose Reyes 22AB, 4H, 5R, 2RBI, .181BA
David Wright 23AB, 11H, 6R, 6RBI, .478BA
Daniel Murphy 22AB, 11H, 7R, 6RBI, .500BA
Justin Turner 18AB, 6H, 4R, 0RBI, .333BA
Angel Pagan 14AB, 6H, 3R, 5RBI, .429BA
Jason Bay 23AB, 7H, 2R, 6RBI, .304BA

Over that same five game time frame, the the Mets have scored 38 runs on 60 hits, so it is no surprise that there are several hot bats in the lineup right now. However, this most recent stretch, at lease temporarily disproves the old notion that "as Jose goes, so do the Mets."

The Mets will need to continue their hot as they look to gain additional ground in the Wild Card race. Last night, although the Braves one, they were able to tie the Pirates for fourth in the race and gain a game on the Diamondbacks who now sit only two games ahead in the race to catch the Braves. Here are the current Wild Card standings:

Mets Make It Five Staight, Beat Nats 8-5!!

The Mets wasted no time in roughing up Chien-Ming Wang, who was making his first Major League start since 7/4/09. Coming off of anterior capsule surgery in his throwing shoulder, Wang was ineffective early as the first five batters for the Mets would reach base and they eventually put up four runs in the first inning.

The Mets would have similar success in the fourth inning when their first four batters reached, including hits by Jason Bay, Ronnie Paulino and Dillon Gee. Bay would be thrown out at home by Rick Ankiel, who threw a bullet from about 250 feet, however the Mets would extended their lead to 6-0 on a sacrifice fly by Jose Reyes.

After a two run error by Jose Reyes in the bottom of the fourth and a sacrifice fly by Ankiel in the bottom of the fifth, the Nationals would cut the lead in half to 6-3, before the Mets would strike again. In the top of the sixth, when it seems as though the Nationals had stolen the momentum, Jason Bay, Ronnie Paulino and Jose Reyes would all double and push the Mets lead to 8-3.

The Mets bullpen would take over following the sixth with varying success. Bobby Parnell and Tim Byrdak both struggled through the eight inning, as they allowed the Nationals to cut the lead to 8-5 and eventually bring the go-ahead run to the plate. DJ Carrasco was chosen by Terry Collins to work through the jam and hand the ball over to Jason Isringhausen who pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 298th career save.

The Mets will look for their sixth straight win tomorrow when RA Dickey (5-8) faces Jason Marquis (8-5) in a 7:05 start in DC.

Game Notes:
- The Mets now lead Major League Baseball with 33 road victories.
- The Mets have scored 34 runs and combined for 49 hits in their last four games.
- At 55-51, the Mets sit at four games over .500, their highest mark on the year.

Lujan should get called up...

Video is of John Lujan recording a four out save while he was with the B-Mets earlier in the season. In all Lujan recorded seven saves in AA and has one in Buffalo while working as Dale Thayer's set-up man.

Mets middle relievers are struggling resulting in Mgr. Terry Collins sticking with starters longer and using the same guys repeatedly to secure late inning wins.

Igarashi is the best of the bunch and even he has an ERA of 4.50.  Acosta has been more inconsistent then good with a 5.60 ERA.  Carrasco has had his moments getting big outs and giving the team a few quality innings but even he's pitching to a 5.46 ERA.

Isringhausen, Byrdak and Beato have been consistently strong.  Since Krod left Parnell has had only three good outings in eight appearances, if I had to guess I think Bobby is pressing.

I was asked who I would bring up, Mike O'Connor and Dale Thayer have had their chances and weren't very impressive.

My vote would go to John Lujan, since being promoted to Buffalo from AA Binghampton he has posted a 3.07 ERA in 20 appearances.  In 29.1 innings he's allowed only seven walks while striking out 28.  Against left handed hitters ( 12.1 innings) he's held them to a .213 BAA and posted a 2.19 ERA.

It would be easier to recall Thayer or O'Connor as they are on the 40 man roster and have had 10 days since their last move but the Mets have room, right now there are 38 players on the 40 man roster.  I would send down Acosta to give Lujan a chance, at least we would see what we have with him...

Pre-Game 106: New York Mets @ Washington Nationals

The New York Mets(54-51) will look to win their 5th consecutive game tonight as they face the Washington Nationals(49-55) in the nation's capitol.

Dillon Gee(9-3, 3.75 ERA) will look to become a 10 game winner in his rookie campaign as he faces a team he has had a lot of success against since being called up last year. In 14 2/3 innings pitched against the Washington Nationals, Dillon Gee has only surrendered a solo home run to Willie Harris, a hit that broke up his no-hit bid last September. Gee has carried no hit bids against the Nationals into the 5th inning or beyond in the two starts and will look to continue his success tonight.

Chien-Ming Wang(0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his first major league start in over 2 years tonight against the New York Mets. Wang underwent shoulder surgery that effectively ended his less than spectacular year with the Yankees in 2009(1-6, 9.64 ERA) before being non-tendered that winter. Signed by the Nationals heading into the 2010 season, Wang's setbacks prevented him from pitching. Finally healthy and having touched 91 MPH in the minor leagues during his rehab starts, Wang will look to make an impression with his new club against the Mets tonight.

New York Mets Starting Lineup:
1. Jose Reyes SS

Mets Fans Have Hope

This morning, New York Post writer, Mike Vaccaro has the following to stay about the state of the team:

1. The Mets are on the periphery of the National League wild-card race. They are not yet what you would call in the wild-card race.

2. The Mets are on the periphery of the National League wild-card race. They are not yet what you would call out of the wild-card race.

3. The Mets aren't likely to win the wild card.

4. That isn't to say they can't win the wild card.

He also went on to say "Hey. You are allowed to hope, and you still have hope. Isn't that what this is supposed to be about?"

He is 100% right! The Mets have crept to within striking distance. Still 6.5 games back of the Atlanta Braves with three teams in their way. They still have plenty of work to do between now and September but with more than a third of the season remaining, anything can happen. Ya Gotta Believe!

Vaccaro's article is probably the most down to earth representation of this team's situation that I have seen in a long time in any major media publication. It is really sound stuff! I recommend you check it out!!

Collins Continues To Push The Right Buttons

Courtesy of Michael Baron
First the team stumbled to a 5-13 record out of the gate. Then it lost its starting first baseman, Ike Davis, for what appears to be the rest of the year. Just a week later it would be perennial all star, David Wright, who would go down for more than two months. To round out the group, team spark plug Jose Reyes would spend a few weeks on the disabled list in July. Finally, as if that wasn't enough to deal with, Sandy Alderson recently traded away the highest paid position player in team history, Carlos Beltran. Oh, and lets not forget that Terry Collins has also been without team ace, Johan Santana, since taking the job.

Thats a lot to deal with for any manager, but Terry Collins has maintained the team's course and they continue to win in spite of these difficulties. Plugging in different players, moving them around and basically putting them in positions where they can succeed, Collins has managed to extract every last ounce of effort from a variety of players who were never expected to sniff the Major League level this season.

Collins has also excelled in preemptive strikes against his ball club. As recently as this week, Collins informed his players that should they feel sorry for themselves and struggle as a result of Carlos Beltran's departure, they will not be here. Earlier this year when the team was struggling, he took the media and threatened to basically blow up the roster in order to find more wins out of his team.

While Collins approach may be at times unorthodox, he keeps winning, and that's really all that matters. On Thursday he was quoted in the New York Daily News as saying, "We're drained...I'm telling you, these guys are playing on nothing but game adrenaline. They're wiped out physically, they're wiped out mentally. This has been a long week for us."

A ploy in the face of a potential let down? Maybe, but winning heals all wounds and this team is no exception. The Mets and their skipper have won more games this season that anyone expected in the face of such adversity. There is no reason to think this most recent brush should be any different. Collins has kept his troops in line, made sure they understand exactly whats at stake and most of all, he's winning. There is little else any fan can ask for...

MiLB News: Harvey Finds His Legs In Binghamton

For the first time since being promoted to AA Binghamton in late June, the Matt Harvey everyone expects took the mound Thursday Night.  Pitching 7.0 innings of one run baseball, Harvey struck out ten and walked only two.  Despite earning a no decision, Harvey lowered his ERA from 7.15 to 5.76 with the outing.

Although his results at the AA level have not been there as of yet, Harvey remains a strike out machine.  On average striking out more than ten batters per nine innings, with Thursdays success he now possesses a 4.22 strike out to walk ratio.  Encouraging numbers no doubt...

And on a side note, Harvey struck out the National's #1 prospect, Bryce Harper, on two occasions last night!

All Is Wright In David's World

Courtesy of Michael Baron
After a 67 day layoff due to a stress fracture in his lower back, David Wright's return to the Mets' lineup was long overdue. With the departure of Carlos Beltran in the not so distant future, a seemingly slender David Wright returned on July 22nd and hasn't looked back since.

In his seven games since rejoining the team, a stretch in which the Mets have gone 5-2, Wright has hit a surprising .454. Furthermore, he has seen his power return, striking for three doubles and two home runs, in route to a .727 slugging percentage. The production numbers have been equally jaw dropping, as Wright has nine runs scored and has driven in twelve over that same time period.

Has the David Wright of old returned? While the sample size is too small to know for sure, Wright is striking out nearly half as frequently as he did prior to his injury and driving the ball to the opposite field with regularity. This mix has allowed him to pull his batting average up a full 42 points in only a week's time.

On the flip side of things, although David has shown some rust in the field with three errors in only seven games, he seems no worse for wear. There seems to be no limitations with regards to flexibility or speed, as displayed on Wednesday night when he fielded a slow grounder down the third base side and made a twisting throw to first for the put out.

Ultimately, this scrappy group has kept the season alive in Wright's absence and could greatly use his help down the stretch if they're going to keep things interesting. Fortunately, it appears that David is up for the task. Whether his decreased bulk has increased his bat speed, or he was able to refine his approach while rehabbing, he has returned with the abilities the Mets and their fans have sorely missed. If he is able to sustain his recent success, it will go along way to ease the loss of Carlos Beltran, and even futher to endearing himself to fans once again.

News: Johan Santana

Johan Santana began his rehab assignment tonight with Single-A St. Lucie. In the outing, Santana threw 33 pitches, 26 for strikes, over 3 scoreless innings of work. Santana allowed 2 hits, hit a batter, and struck out three.

Post Game: Mets Defeat Reds 10-9

Those who have followed the New York Mets this year know that Carlos Beltran has been the quintessential piece to the offensive success of the club. His trade to the San Francisco Giants was supposed to signal an effective end to the offensive prowess the Mets have been able to show this year, some even saying the move was effectively the white flag from general manager Sandy Alderson. However, the New York Mets have rebounded big time over the past 2 days, scoring a combined 18 runs to sweep the Cincinnati Reds in a 4 game series for the first time in franchise history.

This afternoon at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio, the New York Mets(54-51) were able to win a slobber knocker against the Reds 10-9. After jumping out to a 9-3 lead early on, the Reds were able to make things interesting by cutting the lead to 9-8 and eventually 10-9 but ultimately fell short.

Boiling Points:
  • Chris Capuano(9-10, 4.51 ERA) was rocked for 6 runs on 8 hits in 5 1/3 innings. Capuano exited with 2 men on and 1 out in the 6th inning, giving way to Manny Acosta, who promptly served up a high fastball that was crushed by Miguel Cairo for a 3-run home run. While Capuano was able to pick up the victory, it marks the third consecutive start in which he has allowed 4 or more runs.
  • David Wright, Angel Pagan and Jason Bay all had 3 hit afternoons, going a combined 9-14 with a walk. Having not hit an extra base hit in his previous 50 at bats coming into this series, Bay had 2 more doubles today including a bases clearing, 3 RBI double. Angel Pagan also stole his 19th base of the year.
  • Lucas Duda also contributed a bases clearing double to drive in 3 runs and contributed 2 more hits. Duda has had no troubles filling in for Carlos Beltran thus far, who will make his San Francisco Giants debut tonight in Philadelphia.
  • Bobby Parnell pitched a scoreless 8th, effectively commanding his slider to induce two pop-ups and strike out Edgar Renteria.
  • Jason Isringhausen notched his 4th save of the year after allowing a lead off home run to Joey Votto in the top of the 9th.
The New York Mets will head to Washington tomorrow to face Davey Johnson's Nationals for the first time at 7:10 PM ET. The Mets moved 3 games above .500 with their win today and are now sitting 12 games back of the National League East leading Phillies and 7 back of the Wild Card leading Atlanta Braves.

Getting To Know You: Zack Wheeler

With the trade of Carlos Beltran finalized, the Mets now officially welcome high end prospect, Zach Wheeler, into the farm system. Wheeler, ranked as the 55th best prospect in all of Minor League Baseball and best pitching prospect in the Giants farm system in 2011 by Baseball America, immediately bolsters the minimal depth held by the Mets and now provides them with as many as four future rotation members.

Drafted sixth overall by the San Francisco Giants in the 1st round of the 2009 Amatuer Draft, Wheeler features a mid 90s fastball and above average curveball. It is also believed that he is developing a changeup to round out his repertoire, however the pitch is still a work in progress.

Pitching out of Class A, San Jose, for the Giants thus far this year, Wheeler has had significant success, but will need to refine his control prior to being Major League ready. Averaging more than ten strikeouts per nine innings, Wheeler is also walking batters at a pace of nearly five per game. To be fair, this inconsistency has been described as normal for a player developing his pitches.

Should he progress without set back, it is possible that Wheeler could crack the rotation as early as Spring Training 2013, when it is also expect Matt Harvey could break through. That stands to be a big spring for the Mets as Jeurys Familia continues to thrive this season.

While there is no doubt that the Mets are left with a large whole to fill in right field for the time being, Sandy Alderson has done well with this trade. The Mets now find themselves with several future front end starters and I can think of no better place to have depth. Wheeler is expected to report to the Port St. Lucie Mets this weekend.

Pre-Game 105: New York Mets @ Cincinnati Reds

The New York Mets(53-51) will look for their first 4-game series sweep of the year as they face the Cincinnati Reds(50-54) at the Great American Ballpark at 12:35 PM ET.

Chris Capuano(8-10, 4.26 ERA) will take the mound for the Amazings looking to rebound from his last start against against the Florida Marlins. While Capuano shut the Marlins out for the first 5 innings, Capuano fell apart in the 6th, allowing 4 earned runs to end his night. Capuano has lost 3 consecutive decisions and hasn't earned a win since July 4th. Capuano has produced greater results during day games, though, pitching to the tune of a 3.65 ERA.

Homer Bailey(5-4, 3.67 ERA) will look to be the Anti-Capuano as he looks for his third consecutive victory. Bailey has pitched well all season but has been dominant at Great American Ballpark, posting a 2.51 ERA in 5 starts. Since the All Star Break, Bailey has posted a 2.03 ERA in 2 starts. This will be Bailey's first career start against the New York Mets.

MLB Must Address Its Umpire Problem

Tuesday night was witness to what will amount to one of the worse calls by any umpire in the history of Major League Baseball. In the 19th inning of a nearly seven hour game between the Atlanta Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates, home plate umpire Jerry Meals called Julio Lugo safe at home plate, despite being out by a minimum of three feet. Not only did this ridiculous call cost the Pirates the game, but in the midst of a three team dog fight for the NL Central, it could effectively cost the Pirates a trip to the playoffs.

Getty Images
Meals' mistaken call has spurned many in Pittsburgh, but it has also had others across the nation cry foul. The two most popular sentiments seem to be a demand for instant replay and a call for Jerry Meal's job. Both of these present quite a slippery slope. First and foremost, instant replay's presence in baseball must be expanded if for no other reason then avoiding situations where games are decided on blown calls. However, the nature by which such expansion is implemented needs considerable thought. In regards to Meals specifically, firing umpires outright for bad calls will lead to major labor disputes if nothing else. Umpires are only human and to be perfectly honest, get the large majority of calls correct.

In my opinion, this situation actually presents Major League Baseball with the opportunity to address an ongoing problem. Umpires need to be held accountable for their actions and that goes much further than blown calls. At this point, Major League Baseball has done nothing more than acknowledge Meals' error. He should be suspended without question and the same goes for other umpires who consistently put themselves before the game.

For too long now there have been several 'bad egg' umpires who often demand the spotlight. The major violators are Joe West and Angel Hernandez, whose short fuses have seen players and managers repeatedly ejected without cause for years now. Whether behind the plate or on the base paths, each has been the aggressor rather than the peacemaker. To a lesser extent, Tim McClelland's slow demeanor at the plate, which nearly always leads to problems should also be addressed.

Major League Baseball should know better than allow these men to take away from their product on the field. Its the players that put fans in the seats and while most fans enjoy a good argument and even the occasional ejection, it must all stay within reason. Major League Baseball must not only put a system in place to protect its players from over aggressive umpiring, but also protect the sanctity of its game. Repeated instances of poor umpiring are getting increasing press coverage and simply addressing it with a set of apologies is no longer going to cut it. Umpires who cost teams games and eject players prematurely must be punished and there is no better time than the present for Major League Baseball to take such action. They should start with Meals..and they should start right now!

Comparing '04' to '11'

After three disappointing years in which veterans aged, free agents didn't work out and the biggest headlines were about the manager and GM's egos clashing, the first half of 2004 saw a positive response from the fan base. On July 30, 2004 the Mets were six games out of the wild card spot and first year GM Jim Duquette decided to become a buyer.  The result was the Wiggington and Kazmir trades, neither of which trade worked out for the Mets who were never truly in the race that season to begin with and never got much from the likes of Chris Benson and Victor Zambrano.

The situation is eerily similar this season; it's been four years since their last playoff appearance, the two past seasons have been so disappointing they have a new GM/Manager and are playing an exciting brand of baseball that has fans excited about the team while keeping them about six games out of the wild card.  That's where the comparisons end, with a veteran GM who can see the bigger picture and isn't just concerned with keeping the fannies in the seats through August, the Mets aren't making bad desperation trades. Instead of being buyers, Alderson has been a shrewd seller, wisely picking and choosing the moves he makes.  This isn't a fire sale where the main concern is the bottom line, in fact both moves that have been made the Mets sent money to those teams to improve their returns.

This is a rebuilding process on several levels, the Mets have moved players with value or who are on bad contracts.  They are restocking the farm, while investing money saved in draft picks who are signing over slot, other money saved can be used this off season and the players replacing those traded now will be evaluated on the major league level.

This team has as much a chance of making the playoffs as the '04' team and regardless of how the season turns out, they now can look forward to having Zach Wheeler and whoever they obtain from the Brewers in the system.

Post Game:No Beltran? No Problem.

The New York Mets(53-51) defeated the Cincinnati Reds(50-54) behind a masterful complete game from Mike Pelfrey and an offensive outburst, a final score of 8-2.

After Carlos Beltran was traded to the San Francisco Giants this afternoon, the New York Mets played their first game without him under contract since 2004, but one wouldn't be able to notice this by looking at the box score. The Mets pounded the Red for 8 runs and 11 hits including home runs from Lucas Duda and David Wright.

Boiling Points:
  • Mike Pelfrey(6-9, 4.55) pitched his 2nd complete game of the season, allowing just 2 runs on 7 hits. Joey Votto cracked a solo home run early on but Pelfrey, who has pitched horrendously on the road this year, was able to pick up his team on a night when the bullpen had been taxed for 4 innings the previous night.
  • David Wright collected 2 more hits including a solo home run to raise his average to .259 on the year. Since returning, Wright has 2 home runs and 12 hits in 6 games.
  • Lucas Duda hit a laser just over the right field fence for his second home run of the year on his first night taking over for Carlos Beltran.
  • Jose Reyes collected yet another multi-hit game, hitting a single and a double.
  • Daniel Murphy is now hitting .319 after collecting his first career 4 hit game.
  • The Red defense was horrendous, committing an error and looking unmotivated.
The New York Mets will look to sweep the Cincinnati Reds tomorrow afternoon at Great American Ballpark at 12:30 with Chris Capuano taking the mound.

The New York Mets have the potential to move within 6 1/2 games of the Wild Card if the Pittsburgh Pirates are able to defeat the Atlanta Braves tonight. The Phillies loss also moves the Mets within 12 1/2 of the National League East leading Philadelphia Phillies.

Pre-Game: Game 104 - New York Mets VS Cincinnati Reds

The Mets begin the post Carlos Beltran error tonight as they play game 3 of their 4 game series with the Reds tonight from Great American Ball Park. News broke this afternoon that Carlos Beltran would be traded to the SF Giants in exchange for highly touted pitching prospect Zack Wheeler. Beltran new last night would probably be his last game played as a Met, and in a classy move, he took the entire active roster out to dinner to say goodbye. With Beltran gone, Lucas Duda will get the opportunity to play everyday in RF, and prove to the Mets that he is a key cog in the future of the organization.

On the mound for the Mets will be right-hander Mike Pelfrey (5-9, 4.73). Pelfrey has been flat out terrible in 2011, and is 0-2 with a 5.29 ERA over his last three starts. Pelfrey, 2-8 with a 5.79 ERA in 13 road starts, has won his only two decisions in Cincinnati while compiling a 5.50 ERA in three games. However, he hasn't appeared there since a victory on April 8, 2009.

Taking the hill for the Reds will be right-hander Bronson Arroyo (7-8, 5.56). Arroyo has struggled this season as he has been victimized by the long ball, giving up a major-league-high 29, two fewer than his career high set in 2006 and matched in 2009. Arroyo's career number against the Mets are fantastic as he is 7-2, with a 3.31 ERA over 81.2 innings pitched.

Game time is scheduled for 7:10 PM. Here are the starting lineups:

For the (52-51) New York Mets:

1. Jose Reyes SS
2. Willie Harris 2B
3. Daniel Murphy 1B
4. David Wright 3B

Rumors: Mets To get Wheeler For Beltran

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets are expected to send Carlos Beltran and cash considerations to the Giants for prospect right-hander Zack Wheeler.

Analysis: It looks as if the deal is about complete. The Mets will receive right-handed pitching prospect Zach Wheeler from the Giants, in exchange for Carlos Beltran and cash (likely the remainder of his 2011 salary).

If the deal does get completed, a lot of credit must go to Mets GM Sandy Alderson. All along, reports by numerous sources said that there was no way the Mets would get an elite prospect for a 2 month rental in Beltran. However, Alderson kept burning the phone lines, and someone eventually bit.

Mets To Get Wheeler In Beltran Trade?

According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, the Giants are expected to give up prospect right-hander Zach Wheeler as the centerpiece of the trade for Carlos Beltran.

Analysis: Wow! If this is true then something had to have changed drastically in the negotiations. Wheeler is considered the Giants top prospect, and one of the best in the Major's. The Giants must really think adding Beltran will put them over the top if they are indeed going to include Wheeler in the deal. Stay tuned as a deal seems close to being completed.

Giants could be on verge of obtaining Beltran...

I'm sick of these rumors and actually had vowed to stop posting them but it seems like things are close to being completed. Multiple reports are indicating that the Mets and Giants are close to completing a deal for Carlos Beltran.  While what the Mets will get in return hasn't been leaked, there is speculation that OF prospect Gary Brown will be included in the deal.

If Beltran is gone, I'm sad to see him go, despite many fans negative thoughts about him I thought he was the best center fielder they ever had and the core of this group that should have made more then one playoff appearance.

Carlos Beltran Rumor Mill

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, one player discussed as potentially going to the Mets in a Carlos Beltran trade with the Giants is LHP Jonathan Sanchez.

Analysis: Finally a rumor that mentions actual players. If this deal is indeed on the table, I don't see how the Mets turn it down. Sanchez , who is 29 years old, has been known to be wild at times, but when he is on, is extremely effective. Many people compare him to Oliver Perez in that his stuff is there, but he seems to have trouble mentally. I disagree with that assessment. He is definitely more aware than Oliver Perez has ever been. He already has a no-hitter under his belt, and has proved to be highly effective in the Major's. I think putting him in a rotation with Johan Santana could only help his cause, as the young lefty would certainly be willing to listen to a grizzled ace such as Santana, something Oliver Perez never did. Add in the fact that he would still be under Mets control through 2012, if I'm the Mets, I make this deal immediately.

Rumors: Carlos Beltran

More Beltran Rumors:

According to Ken Rosenthal of Foxsports.com, the Rangers are offering the Mets more players, however, the Giants are offering more quality for Beltran.

Analysis: Once again, this rumor is fairly vague. Are the players the Rangers offering currently on the ML level, or are they several mid-level prospects? What kind of quality are the Giants offering? Are they willing to part with a top prospect such as P Zack Wheeler or OF Gary Brown? These are all questions that cannot be answered until a deal is actually struck, which I expect will happen very soon.

Rumors: Carlos Beltran

Here are the latest Carlos Beltran rumors from this morning:

Joe McDonald of ESPNBoston.com reports that the Red Sox are out on Carlos Beltran.

T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com hears that the Rangers believe Carlos Beltran will be dealt to a National League team.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that the Mets are "making progress" with the Rangers and Giants in trade talks for Carlos Beltran.

Mets Back Over .500, Murphy Shines Again

The Mets beat the Reds tonight by the score of 8-6 to move 1 game over .500 once again at 52-51.

This was probably the ugliest game the Mets have been involved in all year. Luckily for the Mets, it was the Reds defense that let Johnny Cueto down all night. Cueto lasted only 5+ innings today and gave up 6 runs. All 6 runs however were unearned as the Reds defense committed 3 errors behind him.

After the Mets jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to the Reds brutal defense, it looked as if John Niese would sail to his 10th win of the year. Niese cruised through the first 3 innings, allowing only 2 base runners on 1 hit. However, in the 4th, the Reds got to Niese for a run. With 2 outs, Chris Heisey lined an RBI single to LF, scoring Brandon Phillips from 2nd, cutting the lead to 4-1. Then after the Mets were retired in order in the Top half of the 5th, things quickly got out of hand for Niese. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Edgar Renteria lined a double down the RF line scoring 2 runs to cut the Mets lead to 4-3. Then the reigning NL MVP Joey Votto took Niese deep the other way over the LF wall to give the Reds a 5-4 lead. Niese was able to hang in there and retire the side and hold the Reds lead to a single run.

Just like last night, the Mets quickly rebounded from a deficit and regained the lead. After Jason Bay walked to lead off the 6th, Ronny Paulino reached safely on 3B Miguel Cairo's error, setting the table with runners on 2nd and 3rd for Jason Pridie. Pridie came through as he ripped a 2b down the RF line, scoring both Bay and Paulino to give the Mets a 1 run lead once again. The Mets tacked on 2 more runs in the 7th on RBI singles from Daniel Murphy and pinch hitter Angel Pagan to give the Mets an 8-5 lead.

After the Reds scored once in the 8th to cut the lead to 8-6, Terry Collins was forced to mix and match his bullpen due to Jason Isringhausen being unavailable. First up was Pedro Beato. Beato retired the lead-off hitter Edgar Renteria on a K, however, Joey Votto singled up the middle to bring the tying run to the plate with 1 out. Beato was able to get the next hitter Brandon Phillips to ground out to SS Jose Reyes who got the force out at 2nd, however, on Justin Turner's return through to 1st, the ball got past Daniel Murphy and sailed into the stands, allowing Phillips to move to 2nd. With 2 outs, Terry Collins decided to go to left-hander Tim Byrdak for a rematch with Jay Bruce. If you recall, Brydak came on last night to retire Bruce in a big spot, and he needed to do it again tonight. Brydak was up to the task as he struck out Bruce for the second consecutive night, and recorded his 3rd career Major League save.

Game Notes:
  • Carlos Beltran was 1-3, with 3 runs scored and reached base in his 32nd consecutive game.
  • David Wright was 2-5, with an RBI.
  • Daniel Murphy had 3 more hits (3-4), raising his average to .313 which is good for 5th in the NL.
  • Despite a rough outing, John Niese won his 10th game of the year, setting a new career high.
Another gutsy win by the Mets. This team has been resilient all year and has given its fan base something to watch despite being over 13 GB in the division. Daniel Murphy has simply been on fire and has proved that he belongs to play everyday on the big league level. The Mets and Reds will continue their 4 game series tomorrow night in Cincinnati. Game time is scheduled for 7:10 PM.

Rumors: Carlos Beltran

According to Peter Gammons of the MLB Network, the Cleveland Indians offered the Mets a good player for Carlos Beltran and was willing to pick up all of his remaining contract. Beltran however, notified the Mets that he did not want to go to Cleveland, ending any chance him going to the Indians.

Analysis: The details of the report are pretty vague. The player coming to the Mets was unidentified, and Gammons didn't exactly make it clear if Beltran was actually asked to waive his no trade clause. However, I think it is safe to say that the Indians are not going to win the World Series, so the report can most certainly be possible as Beltran has made it clear that if he is traded, he wants to go to a clear cut contender.

News: Johan Santana

The Mets have announced that Johan Santana will make his first rehab start with Single-A St. Lucie on Thursday against Daytona Beach at Digital Domain Park. Santana is expected throw around 45 pitches. If Santana stays on schedule and does not suffer any setbacks, he should make his season debut with the Mets sometime in late August.

Rumors: Carlos Beltran

According to Jon Heyman of SI, there's a "strong belief" that the best offer for Carlos Beltran may come from the Rangers. Heyman continues by saying that the major hangup on a potential deal with the Rangers is that Beltran (who has a full no-trade clause) would prefer to stay in the National League.

Analysis: There have been so many Beltran rumors that it is starting to get ridiculous. Rumors have circulated about what team he will go to, what the Mets will get in return, the asking price, and the value of his services. At this pointed I think it is best for everyone to stop the speculation and wait to react on the trade when/if it happens. As far as I'm concerned, the rumors and speculation are boring and exhausting.

Pre-Game: Game 103 - New York Mets VS Cincinnati Reds

The Mets and Reds will play game 2 of their 4 game series tonight in Cincinnati. The best received an excellent outing by starting pitcher R.A. Dickey last night, and will look for much of the same tonight from tonight's starter Jon Niese. Despite a slow start, the Mets offense finished strong as they scored 4 runs in the 7th to come back from a 1-0 deficit heading into the inning.

On the mound for the Mets will be left-hander Jon Niese (9-8, 3.76). Niese struggled during Thursday's 6-2 loss to St. Louis, yielding five runs, three earned, over six innings. He hasn't been particularly sharp against the Reds in his career either, as he sports a record of 0-1, and 4.61 ERA over 13.2 IP. If Niese can get a win tonight, he will reach the 10 win plateau for the first time in his career.

On the hill for the Reds tonight will be right-hander Johnny Cueto (6-3, 1.98). Cueto has held opponents to two or fewer runs eight times during his run of 11 consecutive quality starts, the longest single-season stretch for a Reds pitcher since Bronson Arroyo posted 13 in a row July 28-Sept. 30, 2009. The Mets have handled Cueto very well in the past however, as he is 0-2, with an 8.14 ERA across 21 innings pitched against New York.

Game time is scheduled for 7:10 PM. Here are the starting lineups:

For the (51-51) New York Mets:

1. Jose Reyes SS
2. Justin Turner 2B
3. Carlos Beltran RF
4. David Wright 3B
5. Daniel Murphy 1B
6. Jason Bay LF
7. Ronny Paulino C
8. Jason Pridie CF
9. Jon Niese P

For the (50-52) Cincinnati Reds:

1. Drew Stubbs CF
2. Edgar Renteria SS
3. Joey Votto 1B
4. Brandon Phillips 2B
5. Jay Bruce RF
6. Miguel Cairo 3B
7. Jonny Gomes LF
8, Ramon Hernandez C
9. Johnny Cueto P

LET'S GO METS!

Next Met ? Perez helps Bison's win...

Who will fill the roster spot when Carlos Beltran is traded, it doesn't seem like any of the players they receive in return will make the majors.

Power hitting 3B Zach Lutz, CF field prospect Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Mr. Glass Fernando Martinez are all on the DL, if this is an evaluation process Val Pascucci seems like a waste despite his hot hitting, we've all seen what Nick Evans and Jesus Feliciano can do.  It would probably be best to keep Rebun Tejada and Josh Satin playing everyday in Buffalo then on the bench in NY.

It's a distinct possibility that newly signed Fernando Perez could get the call up, the 28 y/o is still young enough to be evaluated as a potential major league bench player.  The right hander has the range and speed to play CF and leg out extra base hits.

The once Rays prospect had his career derailed by a wrist injury but still had enough value to be part of the Matt Garza trade.  When he was released by the Cubs he was only hitting .238, in the 8 games since joining the Bison's he's hitting .280 and last night had the game winning triple...

The Bisons wasted Batista's finest outing of the season when Pawtucket tied up the game on a three-run bomb of a home run in the eighth by Hector Luna, but the Herd rebounded in their next turn at bat when Fernando Perez's triple was followed by sacrifice fly by Mike Nickeas to give the Bisons an 8-7 win Monday night at Coca-Cola Field. source Buffalo News

Draft update- Nimmo, Fulmer & Verrett

Reports indicate that the Mets maybe close to signing first round pick Brandon Nimmo (source ESPN NY). By the way Nimmo had a pretty good summer...

It's also being reported that supplemental pick RHP Michael Fulmer has finally agreed upon a signing bonus (source MLBTR), Fulmer was the one who broke that he had signed but then reports circulated that the bonus wasn't agreed upon.  Now it appears that Fulmer has agreed to a 937.5K signing bonus.

According to Jim Callis of BA he expects third round pick Scott Verrett to sign..

Post-Game: Dickey Excellent, More Clutch Offense

The Mets defeated the Reds by the score of 4-2.

Mike Leake and R.A. Dickey matched zeros through the first 5 innings. Then after the Mets were set aside in the Top half of the 6th, the Reds finally broke through in the bottom half. With 1 on and 1 out, cleanup hitter Brandon Phillips doubled to RF, scoring Miguel Cairo all the way from first to put the Reds ahead 1-0.

The Reds lead disappeared rather quickly though. After R.A. Dickey was retired on a fly ball to center leading off the 7th, Jose Reyes lined a single to LF to get the Mets offense going. Next, Justin Turner hit a fly ball deep down the RF line that seemed to land in fair territory, however, 1st base umpire Laz Diaz saw it differently and called it foul. After a brief argument from Terry Collins, Turner ran the count full to 3-2 and promptly looped a single over 2B Brandon Phillips head which put runners on the corners with 1 out for Carlos Beltran. Beltran quickly followed with a medium fly ball to CF which scored Reyes easily from 3rd, and tied the game at 1-1. Then after a David Wright 1B, Daniel Murphy lined a ball down the RF line, chasing home both Turner and Wright to put the Mets ahead 3-1. Jason Bay then joined the hit parade as he lined a double of his own down the RF line, scoring Murphy from second to give the Mets a 4-1 lead.

The Reds inched a little closer in the Bot of the 7th on a Drew Stubbs RBI single to cut the score to 4-2, but the Mets bullpen was able to close it out and preserve the 4-2 win.

Game Notes:
  • David Wright went 2-5, with a run scored, but committed his 3rd error since coming off the DL.
  • Daniel Murphy went 2-5, with 2 RBI and is now hitting .308 on the year.
  • Jason Bay's double in the 6th was his 1st double in his last 186 AB's.
  • Jason Isringhausen picked up his 296th career save despite loading the bases in the 9th, and is now 3 for 3 in save opportunities since taking over the closers roll from Francisco Rodriguez.
Tonight was a nice bounce back win after a tough loss yesterday in Florida. R.A. Dickey was fantastic tonight as he threw 6.2 innings of 2 run ball. After leaving several runners on base through the first 6 innings, the Mets were finally able to get their offense going as none other than Jose Reyes got the rally started with a 1 out single. After the Mets tied the game at 1-1, they did what they do best by scoring 3 runs with 2 outs (lead the league with 2 out runs scored). The Mets are now back to .500 at 51-51 and will continue their 4 game series with the Reds tomorrow night at 7:10 PM.

Only moving Beltran is the wrong approach

So reports indicate that the Mets may only trade Carlos Beltran, maybe Tim Byrdak could go as well but that's about it.  The belief is that the front office is attempting to avoid the appearance of a fire sale, despite not being a playoff team the Mets have outplayed many fans expectations which has produced some good will towards Alderson and Co. ( not the Wilpon's).

It's an interesting situation because the good will the organization is experiencing from the fan base is the result of having good baseball people in charge but those same people are concerned with the fallout they would receive if they engaged in multiple trades.

In my opinion there is a huge difference between a fire sale and rebuilding; a fire sale is moving multiple players strictly for salary relief regardless of what they receive in return, whereas, rebuilding is moving multiple valuable pieces strictly for what you receive in return.

If Krod, Beltran, Wright, Santana, Bay and others were dumped to avoid there contracts and the return was only marginal prospects with the Mets attempting to send as little money as possible, that would be a fire sale and I would be outraged.

But if this front office felt that a player could be used to obtain a valuable asset then this is the season to move them despite out playing expectations.  Lets also not forget that the trade which is credited for starting the Phils run was the Abreu/Lidle deal and not because of what they received in return, more for changing the team dynamics while giving others a chance to step up.

Maybe moving another player would net the Mets a player who's stock is down but has a high ceiling or in a package could bring back a better player or two instead of one.

I would be dangling Chris Capuano to the Yanks, they need starting pitching and left handed relief both of which Cappy could fill.  The Cards have PC Duncan and have done a lot more with a lot  less potential then Mike Pelfrey.  Jason Isringhausen would probably already be in Arizona by now regardless of Parnell's struggles.  If Chris Iannetta hitting .220 has value then Ronny Paulino should and not just as a catcher but as a power hitting PH.  Bay back to Pitt. makes a lot of sense and this should be one move the Mets would willing to eat a lot of the contract just to get the team make-up right, not that Bay is a bad guy but his lack of productivity has to weigh on him and everyone else.

That's just an example of a few of the players I think have value and could be moved, now you might be thinking but all your going to get is marginal prospects.  Here's a couple thoughts on that; if the Mets are still having financial issues then every little bit helps, I trust this group to find that diamond in the rough, a player obtained now maybe a chip in a deal down the road and this roster needs to be flipped ( anyone other then Reyes/Wright can go IMO).

Pre-Game: Game 102 - New York Mets VS Cincinnati Reds

After losing 2 of 3 against the Marlins in Florida, the Mets head to Cincinnati tonight to open a 4 game series with the Reds at the Great American Ball Park. With yesterday's loss, the Mets fell a game below .500 (50-51) and remain 8.5 games back of the Wild Card leading Atlanta Braves. Cincinnati also has a record of 50-51, and are coming off a series win against the Braves.

On the mound for the Mets will be right-hander R.A. Dickey (4-8, 3.80). Dickey will be making his first career appearance against the Reds. The right-hander has been average in his last two starts, allowing four runs each time while pitching 13.1 total innings. He went 6.1 innings in a 6-5, 10-inning win over St. Louis on Wednesday.

On the hill for the Reds will be right-hander Mike Leake (8-5, 4.11). Leake is coming off a hard luck loss in which surrendered just 1 run on two hits over six innings, but the Reds fell to the Pirates 1-0. In one career start against New York, Leake is 1-0, with a 1.50 ERA across 6 innings of work.

Game time is scheduled for 7:10 PM. Here are the starting lineups:

For the (50-51) New York Mets:

1. Jose Reyes SS
2. Justin turner 2B
3. Carlos Beltran RF
4. David Wright 3B
5. Daniel Murphy 1B
6. Jason Bay LF
7. Josh Thole C
8. Jason Pridie CF
9. R.A. Dickey P

For the (50-51) Cincinnati Reds:

1. Drew Stubbs CF
2. Miguel Cairo 3B
3. Jay Bruce RF
4. Brandon Phillips 2B
5. Fred Lewis LF
6. Ramon Hernandez C
7. Todd Frazier 1B
8. Paul Janish C
9. Mike Leake P

LET'S GO METS!

Nimmo should be a deadline signing...

Baseball America's Jim Callis was answering questions on his twitter account and sounded pretty sure that Brandon Nimmo, the Mets first round pick would sign by the August 15th deadline.  Nimmo has committed to the University of Arkansas, so he has a fall back option should negotiations fall apart.  Apparently prior to the draft the Mets had their feelers out and Nimmo would go pro over college but it will cost the Mets much more then his slot value.  Even signed it's not without risk, Nimmo is a high school kid in which his high ceiling was determined based on very little exposure since Wyoming doesn't have high school baseball...

Psychological impact of losing Krod on Parnell

There's a reason Luis Ayala recorded nine saves for the Mets in 2008 and it wasn't because the waiver wire pick-up from the lowly Nats ( at that time) was the best option, it was because once Billy Wagner went down none of the viable options could handle the position.

First up was Aaron Heilman who saw his numbers in August balloon to a .283 BAA and 7.90 ERA.  Duaner Sanchez had similar numbers with a 7.94 ERA and a .360 BAA also in August.  In Sept Brian Stokes gave it a try resulting in a .300 BAA and 4.61 ERA.  And the guy who closed out the season for us Scott Schoeneweis had a 5.40 ERA with a .345 BAA for the last month.

Even Ayala who had a 5.65 ERA in August but held hitters to a .246 BAA saw that increase to a .340 BAA in Sept. while his ERA increased to 6.55 ERA.

I'm leaving out a few participates like Parnell himself, Carlos Muniz, Eddie Kunz, Joe Smith, and Ricardo Rincon but they were really only in a few games.

You could say that these were just mediocre pitchers who as the season progressed became more exposed and exploited by hitters, but it just seems odd that they all seemed to struggle once Wagner was gone and their comfortable role was gone...

I bring up 2008 because it appears that history is repeating itself, since Krod was traded even though Jason Isringhausen has been closing Bobby Parnell has struggled.

His first night back after the All-Star break was his only successful outing and even that needed a great double play started by Jose Reyes after Parnell had loaded the bases.  In the three games since that Cards game Parnell has allowed six hits, four runs and two walks while striking out three.  Compare that to the prior 26 innings this season where he only gave up 26 hits, only 10 runs and 10 walks while striking out 33.

Maybe it's just coincidental that Parnell is going through a bad stretch and that seemingly every effective pitcher struggled once Wags went down in '08' but I have a hard time denying the psychological effects of losing the closer and the self imposed pressure they've placed on themselves...

News: Johan Santana

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Mets GM Sandy Alderson told the Press & Sun-Bulletin of Binghamton on Sunday night via email: "The next outing for Johan will be in a controlled setting in Port St. Lucie."

After Johan completed a successful bullpen session yesterday at Sun Life Stadium in Florida, it was suggested that he might begin his minor league rehab assignment this week. However, it seems that the Mets will be extra cautious with Santana and have him throw another simulated game.

I can't argue with their thinking as the most important thing is to have a healthy Johan Santana for 2012.

Thoughts on the Beltran to Giants rumors...

Multiple rumors are speculating that people in the know believe Carlos Beltran will end up with the Giants with the Braves and Phils still in the hunt and others lurking in the periphery.  Of course, others have countered that nothing is imminent and it's still an open race in the Beltran sweepstakes.

Brian Sabean has been frugal over the years with his prospects, while being active at the deadline he tends to go for the type B players so he's only giving up marginal prospects.  But with an older team that has several key players on the cusp of free agency or arbitration increases this might be his only way to repeat before this group gets dismantled.

The Giants also have a solid farm system and if the Mets are looking for a bat, in addition to there two big offensive prospects ( Belt / Brown), they have three other outfielders (Peguero, Neal, Parker) in the top ten.  Maybe I'm undervaluing Carlos but I think Brown is a pipe dream, I think Parker is more this front offices type ( toolsy but not splashy).

7) Jarrett Parker, OF, Grade B-: Hitting .270/.382/.430 with nine homers, 57 walks, 16 steals for San Jose in 337 at-bats, also 87 strikeouts. Intriguing across-the-board tools/skills, Double-A transition will be interesting. source Minor League Ball

Moving Beltran to the NL West would avoid the potential PR nightmare of having Carlos return to beat the Mets with the Phils or Braves.  Of course, if either team would pay a premium for his services it would make moving him within the division an acceptable situation.

It does appear that the Mets are serious about their chances of working with the Giants...

Post Game Wrap-Up: Wright Clutch, But Parnell Can't Hold Lead

The Mets lost the rubber game of their 3 game series with the Marlins this afternoon by the score 0f 5-4 to fall a game below .500 at 50-51.

Dillon Gee showed today why he might be a very valuable piece of the Mets future. He clearly did not have anything today. After giving up a run in the 1st and 2 in the 2nd, it seemed as if Gee was not going to hang around very long, especially when he allowed the first 2 to get on base in the 3rd. However, Gee bared down and somehow worked his way through the 3rd without giving up a run, and also worked out of trouble in the 4th and 5th. It is not very often a young starter can negotiate his way through 5 innings when having absolutely no command of any of his pitches. This type of mental toughness is something that will keep Gee around hopefully for many years.

After falling behind 3-1 after 2 innings of play, the Mets offense finally kicked it in gear in the 6th. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Jason Bay finally came through, lining a single into LF to cut the Marlins lead to 3-2, and advanced the tying run to 3rd with 1 out. Josh Thole however struck out and Lucas Duda grounded out to strand the tying run at 3rd base.

Then after a dominate inning of relief from Manny Acosta in the 6th, David Wright hit a clutch 2-run HR in the 7th to give the Mets a 4-3 lead. After another scoreless inning from Manny Acosta to get through the 7th, Bobby Parnell came on in the 8th and blew the lead. Logan Morrison quickly tied the game with a solo HR to lead off the inning. Then after a single and a SAC bunt, John Buck came off the bench and delivered a go-ahead RBI 2B to give the Marlins the lead for good at 5-4

Game Notes:
  • David Wright had another good day at the plate as he was 3-4, with a HR (7) and 2 RBI.
  • Jose Reyes went 2-5 today.
  • Angel Pagan was forced to leave today's game with heat exhaustion.
This is a tough loss to swallow. After Wright hit the clutch HR in the 7th, I thought the Mets would be able to hold on, however, Bobby Parnell did not have a good slider today and it cost him on both Morrison's solo HR and John Buck's RBI 2B. The Mets will look to rebound tomorrow night as they head to Cincinnati for a 4 game series.

News: Johan Santana

Mets injured ace Johan Santana threw a 45 pitch bullpen session this morning at Sun Life Stadium and declared that he is ready to begin a rehab assignment this week, as long as he wakes up Monday morning feeling good. Santana has been out since last September when he underwent surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder. According to reports, if he wakes Monday feeling good, his rehab assignment may begin Wednesday with Single-A St. Lucie.

Pre-Game: Game 101- New York Mets @ Florida Marlins

The trading deadline now officially one week away, Carlos Beltran's expiration date as a New York Met will coincide. On what will probably be his final Sunday as a New York Met, Carlos Beltran will bat 3rd and look to help lead the Mets to their second consecutive series win.

Dillon Gee(9-3, 3.67 ERA) will look to continue his impressive rookie campaign this afternoon as he takes the hill for the second time since the All Star Break. After coming off of consecutive rough starts before the break, Gee picked up his 9th win of the season on Tuesday night by limiting the Cardinals to 2 runs on 3 hits. Gee hasn't pitched well away from Citi Field this year, posting a 4.85 ERA in 7 starts and 8 appearances compared to his 2.85 home ERA.

Anibal Sanchez(6-3, 3.52 ERA) has been the Marlins' best pitcher since Josh Johnson hit the disabled list earlier this year and has pitched to a 3.47 ERA at Sun Life Stadium this year. David Wright may be happy to find out that Sanchez has posted an ERA of 4.45 against right handed batters this year, something Wright has struggled mightily against.

The trio of Carlos, Jose and David may be coming to an unceremonious end, but on this final Sunday it's hard to argue that it isn't necessary.

1. Jose Reyes SS

Post Game: Wright and Wrong, Mets Falls To Fish 8-5

David Wright returned to the Mets last night after spending 2 months on the disabled list with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. A much welcomed return last night produces mixed results tonight as Wright came up tonight with men on base during his first 4 plate appearances and only managed to capitalize once. Wright would end the night 1-5 with a 2 RBI single in the top of the 5th, but would also make a costly fielding error which would yield the Marlins a run an inning later. A night in which Jose Reyes, Justin Turner and Carlos Beltran all reached base 3 times or more turned out to be a wasted effort, but the fault was in no way Wright's alone.

Boiling Points:
  • Chris Capuano(8-10, 4.26 ERA) breezed through his first 5 innings of work, striking out the side in the first inning before falling apart during the Marlins' 6th. Capuano surrendered 4 runs on Gaby Sanchez's 2-run blast, a solo home run by Logan Morrison and a RBI triple from Emilio Bonifcacio.
  • DJ Carrasco and Ryota Igarashi pitched 2 rough innings of relief, Carrasco surrendering 3 runs on 3 hits including Gaby Sanchez's 2nd 2-run home run and Igarashi allowing 1 run. Carrasco's ERA is now a staggering 5.46.
  • Lucas Duda and Jose Reyes hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the top of the 9th inning to bring the Mets within 3. It was Duda's first home run of the year and Reyes' 4th.
  • Carlos Beltran walked during his first 3 at-bats before hitting an RBI single in the 4th.
  • Justin Turner went 3-4 with 2 doubles, a single and a walk.
  • Jose Reyes collected his 46th multi-hit game of the year, going 3-5 with 2 base hits and a solo home run. Reyes leads the National League with a .352 batting average, nearly 20 points above Todd Helton.
The New York Mets will look to take the rubber match against the Florida Marlins tomorrow afternoon at 1:10 PM ET.

Pre-Game: Game 100- New York Mets @ Florida Marlins

Capuano went 7 2/3 innings but surrendered 4 runs on 7 hits. Capuano has lost his last 2 decisions after winning his previous 5 decisions. Capuano has fared worse during his starting assignments at night, posting a 4.31 ERA compared to his 3.65 ERA during the day.

Clay Hensley(1-2, 2.70 ERA) will look to defeat the Mets for the second consecutive start while seeking his second win as a starter since 2008. Although the Mets were able to make Hensley work hard during his last outing, they were unable to capitalize as Hensley finished with 5 scoreless innings under his belt. In 9 innings pitched at Sun Life Stadium(relief appearances only), Hensley has only allowed 2 runs.

Post Game: Mets Defeat Marlins 7-6

The New York Mets(50-49) defeated the Florida Marlins(47-53) behind a strong offensive showing and David Wright's return.

Although David Wright hadn't played a major league game since May 15th, he returned to a team invigorated by the people who doubted them, a team at .500--something that seemed like a long shot this late in the season when Wright went down. Needing to jump out of the box early with Mike Pelfrey on the mound, Wright wasted no time to show that his back injury was the cause of his struggles, ripping a double down the first base line to drive in a run and help bring the Mets to a 3-0 lead after the first inning.

Wright's performance was impressive, giving the Mets the lead in the 8th inning with a RBI double off of Edward Mujica to give the Mets a 6-5 lead before Daniel Murphy doubled Wright home to give the Mets a 7-5 lead.

Boiling Points:
  • Mike Pelfrey(5-9, ND,4.73 ERA) was once again shaky on the road, pitching 6 innings while allowing 4 runs on 5 hits and walking 4. Pelfrey was well over 100 pitches heading into his 6th inning of work as he struggled to put hitters away early on.
  • Pedro Beato was shaky in his 1/3 of an inning of work, allowing 1 run, 1 hit and 2 walks. He was replaced by Tim Byrdak, who let an Beato's inherited runner to score from 3rd.
  • Bobby Parnell(3-1, 3.10 ERA) would record the final out in the 7th before allowing a run in the 8th inning, but managed to hold the lead for Jason Isringhausen, who pitched a perfect 9th inning to record his 2nd save of the year.
  • Daniel Murphy continues to rake at the plate, having another multi-hit game and raising his average to .307. Murphy drove in 2 runs to bring his total to 42 on the year, 2nd behind Carlos Beltran
  • Jose Reyes and David Wright also had multi-hit games, and for Reyes it was his major league leading 45th multi-hit game of the year.
The New York Mets will look to take game 2 of their 3 game series in Miami tomorrow night at 7:10 PM ET.

News: Picard Still Trying For $1B

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Irving Picard, the trustee attempting to recover funds for victims of the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme is still indeed trying to recover $1B plus from Fred Wilpon and Sterling Equities. A report earlier today in the New York Post stated that Picard was withdrawing his case against the Wilpons' for $1B and will only look to recover the $300M in profit reportedly taken in by the Wilpons'. Stay tuned.

Pre-Game: Game 99- New York Mets @ Florida Marlins

Do you hear that sound? It's the metaphoric metronome, and time is running out for Carlos Beltran's time on the New York Mets.

The New York Mets(49-49) will oppose the Florida Marlins(47-52) tonight at Sun Life Stadium as Mike Pelfrey(5-9, 4.67 ERA) will oppose Chris Volstad(5-8, 5.59 ERA). Pelfrey struggled mightily in his last start against Philadelphia, surrendering a 3-run home run to Michael Martinez which put the Phillies ahead indefinitely. Pelfrey lasted only 5 innings, surrendering 4 runs. It has been a rough go for Pelfrey on the road this year, posting a 2-8 record with a 5.77 ERA in 12 starts and 64 innings. Volstad, meanwhile, failed to reach the 4th inning during his last outing, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits in 3 innings. Despite the huge ERA, Volstad has pitched to a lower ERA at home(5.19) this year.

For the first time since May 15th, David Wright will return to the lineup and man third base. Wright's struggles at the plate should be largely attested to his back injury, but it should be interesting to see where he picks up tonight. Wright's .226/.337/.404 line is well below his career averages, but with Wright tearing the cover off the ball in the minors the Mets will hope it's a thing of the past.

The rumors swirling about Carlos Beltran are well known, and the core trio of Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes and David Wright will all be starting tonight for perhaps the last time. There was a time in which many people believed the three would never play together again, but if this is truly their swan song, it has been an interesting ride.

New York Mets Starting Lineup:
1. Jose Reyes SS
2. Justin Turner 2B
