Comparing Pelf to the market

Mike Pelfrey and the Mets settle on a one year deal to avoid arbitration, $5.675 M got the Mets a 27 y/o who made 33 starts averaging 5.84 innings per start for 193 innings with an ERA of 4.74, WHIP 1.47 and a 7-13 record.

I'm no fan of Pelfrey's and wish the Mets had dealt him as a change of scenery guy, but lets compare him to the market to see what type of value we got for him.  I did not include the big contracts like C.C., C.J. and Buehrle.

I separated the the lefties from the righties as they usually have more value but only Saunders was paid more.    Saunders was clearly the better pitcher last year and only three years older, from the other lefties none were more durable but Bedard, Chen and Maholm in shorter stints produced more and received less.  Cappy's deal looks bad next to Pelf both in performance and years.

Amongst the righties Dempster's deal looks really bad since there numbers were essential the same but cost the Cubs 8M more.  Harang's deal looks solid getting just slightly more then Pelf for better numbers in almost the same amount of innings.  Kuroda had solid numbers but at 35y/o moving to the AL east I would be concerned at 10M.  Garcia, Wang and Marquis all are making less and pitched less but pitched better when they did.  The guys on minor league deals are on them for a reason.

Pelfrey basically got 1M over his current market value for his stamina, as much as he's become our Carl Pavano there really wasn't an alternative for what your getting, at the price your getting it at.
