Back in December the Mets claimed Jeremy Hefner off waivers from the Pirates who had claimed him earlier from the Padres.
The 25y/o right hander has pitched exclusively as a starter in the Padres organization after being drafted in the 5th round in 2007 by San Diego. Interestingly enough the Mets attempted to draft him twice; 2004 in the 46th round and 2005 in the 48th round.
Since joining the Padres system he's appeared in 131 minor league games in which 120 were starts. It appears his best season was in 2010 at AA San Antonio when he went 11-8 in 28 starts with two complete games and a 2.95 ERA / 1.23 WHIP. Last year was his first full year in AAA and he seemed to struggle a bit with the jump, posting a 4.98 ERA / WHIP 1.51 in 28 starts with a 9-7 record.
The Mets should be very familiar with what Jeremy can offer since he came through the Padres system when Paul Depodesta and Sandy Alderson were with that organization. The Mets are very thin in starting pitching and Hefner should be up at some point this season, here's a tweet he made about two weeks prior to spring training..
