Mets concerned - no intimidating bench hitter...

As it looks now the bench is constructed of Mike Nickeas as the back-up catcher, Ronny Cedeno middle infielder, Justin Turner corner infielder, Scott Hairston right handed outfielder and either Michael Baxter or Adam Loewen as the left handed outfielder.

If they need another outfielder it will come down to whether they feel they can use Scott Hairston in center and carry Vinny Rottino on the bench or take one of the youngsters in Kirk Nieuwenhuis or Matt Den Dekker as a full time center fielder.

Of the group no matter what combination you go with Adam Loewen is the most intimidating power threat for the bench, which isn't saying much since he's only two years into being a hitter.  According to Adam Rubin the Mets are aware of this deficiency and may look to address it...

A Mets official said Monday there is concern about the lack of feared hitters on the team's bench. The official said the Mets will be searching the last week of spring training for upgrades once players are cut loose from other camps -- particularly because of the $100,000 retention bonus required to keep certain players with major league experience on minor league contracts who will not make the Opening Day roster. source ESPN NY
