Mets Right To Lock Niese Up Long Term

ESPN's Adam Rubin has reported this evening that the Mets are in discussions with Jon Niese to extend the twenty-five year old, home-grown lefty to a deal resembling the one signed by Ranger's youngster, Derek Holland.  That deal, totaling five years and $28.5 would extend Niese through his arbitration eligible years and see him into the prime of his career.

Early internet reaction on the potential deal, which is not imminent, has been mixed.  Personally, I think this move is a no brainer.  I've long said that Niese is one of only a handful of players I see on the roster long term.  Making this move now brings with it the potential go have him at a discount should he take the next step towards becoming a dominant pitcher this season.

More to come as it becomes available, but this appears to be the first instance of the Mets truly looking forward now that the Madoff litigation has been put to rest.
