What did Jon Niese do fresh off of the announcement of his new five year contract extension? The young lefty took the mound on Easter Sunday and pitched six hitless innings in route to his first, and the Mets third straight win to start the 2012 season.
The Mets jumped out early on Mike Minor when they manufactured a first inning run following a lead off double by Ruben Tejada. The Mets would add runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth in route to a 7-0 lead when Niese took the mound in the seventh.
The Braves then started chipping away, getting three back from Niese before he was lifted from the game with no one out in the seventh. Manny Acosta allowed another run to cross in the seventh, which was charged back to Niese, and another in the eighth on a Brian McCann solo home run.
Frank Francisco entered in the bottom of the ninth to pitch an uneventful inning, securing the 7-5 win for the Mets, collecting his third save in as many games.
The Mets are now 3-0 on the season.
- Ruben Tejada had a career high four hits on the day.
- The Mets had some iffy moments in the field, however a Lucas Duda drop accounted for the error on the day.
- Ike Davis is yet to collect a hit on the year.
Monday night at 7:10 pm the Mets will welcome the Nationals to Citi Field for their first meeting of the year when Mike Pelfrey (0-0) takes on Edwin Jackson (0-0).
