According to Adam Rubin in this tweet, when the Mets arrived in town the Nats inquired about the Mets interest in Rick Ankiel. The Nats were probably attempting to maintain some level of leverage prior to placing him on waivers, now that he's been designated if the Mets want him they can wait to sign him at league minimum.
The Mets were rumored to be interested in Ankiel this off-season before he picked the Nats, the biggest problem with him is that he's another left handed bat. Of course, if they feel Kirk needs more seasoning in AAA now that he's struggling by hitting .238 in June and .100 in July and .167 against LHP.
Much like Kirk the 33y/o Ankiel can play all three outfield positions and has a cannon for an arm, he's hitting .228/.282/.411 this season and averages 20 doubles/ 10 home runs a season.
I don't think the Mets will even consider a lefty unless it's because they're setting up a trade that would include one, but I thought it was interesting that the Nats were asking us...
