Bob Nightengale of USA Today is reporting that the Mets have signed LaTroy Hawkins to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training.
Hawkins is a 40 y/o right handed reliever who has compiled 88 saves over his 18 year career. Last year with the Angels he appeared in 48 games with a 3.64 ERA/1.38 WHIP and earned one save. He held left handed batters to a .214 BA and a .310 slg. pct. In the first half of the season he appeared in 23 games and posted a 1.35 ERA but in the second half appearing in 25 games he posted a 5.73 ERA.
Last night Alderson said the bullpen would be a strength and there have been reports that the Mets were looking for a reliever with closing experience. While I like bringing in Hawkins on a minor league I'm hoping he's not the set-up man they're bringing in, in case Francisco struggles.
